Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Hartford is seeking a Head Swim Coach to lead the Swim Team program and elevate its level of excellence. Under the Aquatics Director, you will design training, schedules, and competitive timelines while fostering a culture aligned with YMCA values.

You will recruit and mentor coaches and volunteers, coordinate meets, and ensure safety and compliance with health regulations. Strong communication and leadership are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

• 3+ years experience as a competitive swimmer; collegiate competitive swimming experience preferred.
• 2+ years swim coaching experience preferred.
• Possesses (or can obtain upon hire) USA Swimming and YMCA coaching credentials.
• Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of swim skills and have a strong foundation in stroke mechanics and be able to communicate effectively with swimmers and their parents.
• Will require valid USA/ YMCA coaching certification
• Will weekend work at swim meets
• Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid certifications or willingness to obtain; Twenty-one (21) years of age or older preferred.

Responsibilities

• Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
• Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
• Develops and maintains collaborative relationships and partnerships with community organizations.
• Promotes and models strong character development among program participants and staff; encourages habits that foster a strong community and team spirit that is consistent with YMCA core values.
• Understands and completely adopts the Team Philosophy; ensures board members, assistant coaches and parents understand and model it.
• Attends league board meetings and addresses issues affecting swimmers or coaches.
• Recruits, hires, trains, develops schedules and directs coaches and volunteers; reviews coach performance.
• Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals; ensures records of staff certifications are current.
• Oversee, support and communicate with the coaching staff; provide educational opportunities to coaching staff and volunteers.
• Develop and implement training programs, practice schedules and meet schedules for the entire coaching staff and team.
