Strength and Conditioning Coach

Position Summary

The role of the Strength and Conditioning Coach is to provide leadership, supervision, and organization of a specific athletic activity, and to carry out the objectives of the total athletic program. This includes helping each participating student achieve a high level of skill, an appreciation for the values of discipline and an increased level of self-esteem.

Reports To : Director of Athletics/Activities

Wage/Hour Status : Exempt

**Coaching a sport during the season makes one ineligible for this position.

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Valid coaching license through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners or the ability to obtain it prior to the start of the season.
  • Strong knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, instruct, and supervise students athletes and a coaching staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure and remain calm.
  • Proficient in organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Essential Functions

Year-round responsibilities

  • Formulate objectives for the coming sport season as it would pertain to player personnel and assistant coaching responsibilities.
  • Keep abreast of new ideas and techniques by attending clinics and workshops, reading in his/her field and encouraging the assistant coaches to do the same.
  • Be knowledgeable of rules and regulations concerning his/her sport, and changes which occur.
  • Be active in professional organizations such as the state coaches association.
  • Inventory, selection, care and maintenance of equipment.

Seasonal Responsibilities

  • Before season
    • Assist Activities Director with proper registration of all athletes at the beginning of the season.
    • Assist Activities Director in the collection necessary fees.
    • Assist Activities Director in compiling eligibility lists and other reports.
    • Be aware of and post an emergency phone and doctors list.
    • Arrange for a systematic issuance of school equipment.
    • Make sure all athletes have had physicals.
    • Explain all regulations of the district.
    • Clarify to athletes the letter award policy.
    • Select and instruct team managers on proper care of equipment, facilities, and other duties assigned.
    • Check arrangements for all bus trips with the Activities Director.
  • During Season
    • Assume responsibility for constant care of equipment and facilities being used.
    • Assume supervisory control over all phases of teams in the program.
    • Organize and schedule practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athlete's greatest potential.
    • Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner.
    • See that facility regulations are understood and enforced.
    • Emphasize safety precautions and use accepted training and injury procedures.
    • Conduct oneself and teams in an ethical manner during practice and in contests.
    • Report outcome of contest to the media.
    • Instruct players on rules and rule changes, and new ideas and techniques.
    • Provide to the athletic director for file purposes, a copy of all general correspondence and bulletins to student athletes and parents. This would include handbooks.
    • Adhere to the rules and regulations of the school district regarding school bus regulations.
    • Directly supervise or designate a supervisor of all dressing rooms and lock up all facilities at the close of each practice or contest.
    • Accompany the varsity team to all interscholastic activities away and be the first in attendance at home events.
    • Designate one or more of assistant coaches to be responsible for the junior varsity team.
  • End of Season
    • Arrange for the systematic return of all school equipment and hold the athlete responsible for all equipment not returned.
    • Arrange for cleaning, storing, and conducting an inventory of all equipment.
    • Recommend those student athletes who have fulfilled requirements for athletic letters, certificates or special awards.
    • Evaluate past season.
    • Recommend additions and/or improvements for the care and maintenance of facilities.
    • Recommend personnel changes to the Activities Director and principal.
    • Submit recommendations for schedule for the next year.
    • Select equipment and make recommendations for purchases of such to the Activities Director.
    • Maintain records of team and individual accomplishments and submit a copy to the Activities Director.

Other Functions

  • Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Collaborate with internal and external personnel (e.g. other administrators, district staff, public agencies, community members, etc.) for implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
  • Work well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with district personnel and work well with others on jobs that require more than one person.
  • Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
  • Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
  • Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to District operations.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
