Job summary

The Ankeny Community School District is seeking a part-time Enrichment Assistant for the Before & After School Program in Ankeny, IA. You will support enrichment leaders, assist with lesson plans, and supervise students in various areas.

Responsibilities

  • Assist enrichment leaders in implementing lesson plans by working with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning and assist with hands-on projects.
  • Provide individual or small group support for students, including behavior interventions as directed by the site leader.
  • Communicate expectations, model positive behavior, and use de-escalation and conflict-resolution strategies when needed.
  • Engage with students and families to create a safe, positive, engaging environment.
  • Supervise and monitor students in classrooms and non-classroom settings (cafeterias, hallways, gyms, playgrounds, buses).
  • Provide front office coverage during dismissal and assist with data entry and general support.
  • Maintain materials and clean up activity areas after use.
  • Present a professional image and provide exemplary customer care per program standards.
  • Collaborate with site leaders and staff to meet student needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow safety standards; obtain required certifications (CPR/First Aid).
  • Adhere to district policies and program guidelines; some evenings/weekends may be required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Enrichment Assistant

Purpose Statement

The role of Before & After School Program – Enrichment Assistant is to support the physical, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of all students in the out-of-school setting. They assist in implementing high-quality, hands‑on enrichment programming while creating a nurturing environment where every student feels safe, valued, and engaged.

Job Title: Before & After School Program – Enrichment Assistant
Hourly Rate: $15.75/hour

Reports To: Manager of Before & After School Programs and/or Before & After School Program Site Leader/Assistant Site Leader(s)

Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt

Job Details:

Employment Dates: August – June

  • Hours: Monday – Friday 6:15 – 7:45 a.m.
  • Hours: Monday – Friday 2:30 – 6:00 p.m. (with some flexibility to arrive between 2:30-4:00 p.m.)
  • No‑School Day Camps – required availability 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., as enrollment requires
  • Extended Break Camp (winter, spring) – required availability 6:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., as enrollment requires
  • Inclement Weather Program Days – per Handbook inclement weather hours

Position hours vary. Total weekly hours will not exceed 29.75; exact hours are per individual employment agreement. Positions are scheduled in sessions (approximate 9-week increments). Length of contract: one session with the opportunity to extend the position for additional sessions throughout the program year, pending satisfactory performance evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 16 years of age.
  • Strong communication and relationship‑building skills with students and staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and flexibility.
  • Ability to take direction and a willingness to collaborate as part of a team.
  • Ability to implement procedures and support daily operations.
  • Must demonstrate reliable attendance.
  • Experience working and interacting with school‑age students, preferred.

Essential Functions

  • Assist enrichment leaders in implementing lesson plans by working with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning and assist with hands‑on projects
  • Provide individual or small group support for students, including assistance with behavior intervention plans, as directed by the site leader
  • Assist site leaders and enrichment leaders in communicating expectations, modeling positive behavior, and using de‑escalation and conflict‑resolution strategies when needed
  • Actively engage with students and families to establish a safe, positive, engaging environment
  • Supervise and actively monitor students in various settings, including classrooms and non‑classrooms, such as cafeterias, hallways, gyms, playgrounds, buses, during arrival and dismissal, and on field trips
  • Provide front office coverage while facilitating student dismissal and verifying authorized pickups; perform accurate data entry; and assist with questions and general support
  • Demonstrate responsible use of program resources by ensuring appropriate materials are available, properly put away, and that activity areas are cleaned and organized after use
  • Present a positive, professional image of the Before & After School Program while providing exemplary customer care and following the Before & After School Program Standards of Service
  • Collaborate with site leaders and other Before & After School Program staff to meet the needs of all students
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow legal and ethical standards related to student support
  • Obtain and maintain required certifications, including adult and child CPR and First Aid, and participate in ongoing professional development to ensure compliance with Iowa Department of Health & Human Services minimum standards
  • Adhere to safety protocols and policies established by Ankeny Community School District and the Before & After School Program, as well as the Iowa Department of Health & Human Services licensing minimum standards to ensure the safety of oneself and others
  • Support District goals and objectives while adhering to all District policies, contributing to the overall success of the school community
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required on a limited basis
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Working Environment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
