Job summary

The Hampton-area Head Start program seeks an educator to provide a safe, supervised learning environment for children across classroom, outdoor play, and field trips. You will promote social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development in line with Creative Curriculum and licensing guidelines.

Parental involvement and transition to kindergarten are emphasized. The role includes developing individualized goals, ongoing progress assessments, and collaboration with families and staff.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of child development, family dynamics, and the needs of children.
  • Bachelor’s degree in ECE or related field with coursework; enrollment in a bachelor’s program acceptable.
  • Diploma/transcripts to validate degree or related coursework if degree is in a related field.
  • Two years’ preschool classroom experience with diverse needs, including special needs and culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to apply early childhood development theory in daily classroom activities.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially listening and writing.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License and proof of auto insurance if driving is required.
  • Employment conditional on enrollment in Child Care Division - Criminal History Registry.
  • Must present TB/Physical at time of employment or within specified days.

Responsibilities

  • Frequent decisions to assure developmental progress of children.
  • Supervise preschool children and maintain a safe learning environment; monitor events in classroom and play areas.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies or crises; provide first aid or CPR.
  • Daily kneeling, bending, and sitting to attend to children's needs.
  • Provide classroom supervision and effective communication with assistants and volunteers.
  • Participate in team meetings to plan collaborative services across service areas.
  • Meet regularly with parents and staff regarding each child’s status and progress.
  • Conduct regular home visits and parent/teacher conferences to share information.
  • Develop balanced lesson plans with parental involvement reflecting standards and cultural influences.
  • Prepare materials and adapt curriculum to meet individual goals.
