Job description

Position Type: Athletics/Activities/ Activity Sponsor

The Scholastic Bowl Head Coach will organize, direct, coordinate and supervise scholastic bowl team members. The head coach will organize approved fundraisers throughout the year in order to meet the needs of the club’s expenses as applicable and coordinate with the conference a schedule for competing and add additional competitions as needed throughout the season and will compete in the IHSA Scholastic Bowl series.

Characteristics, Duties and Responsibilities
  • Initiate and solicit student participation and awareness of scholastic bowl.
  • Schedule, attend and supervise all practices as well as keep records of attendance and student participation.
  • Monitor the supervision of participants during all practices and meets.
  • Work with the Director of Activities and Athletics to schedule events and travel. Advise, assist and work with the athletic/activity office when hosting events.
  • Understanding of school, conference, and IHSA rules.
  • Attends meetings scheduled by the conference and cooperate/communicate with other conference coaches in carrying out directives at conference.
  • Attend mini-bus training and follow all safety procedures when driving/transporting students.
  • Recruit and train timers and moderators for all home contestants.
  • Arrange and schedule practices.
  • Work in a positive and productive manner with a wide variety of students, faculty and staff. Communicate regularly with the administration regarding the progress of the team.
  • Work within the given budget and keep accurate records of the monies used and received.
  • Follow fundraising procedures according to District policies.
  • Recruit student participants each school year.
  • Request room space for meetings and events.
  • Manage and supervise the use of facilities during activities and events.
  • Confirm the security of the facilities.
  • Ensure that students have a way to get home and remain present until the last student is released.
  • Promote and publicize club meetings and events.
  • Engage students in community service activities.
  • Maintain positive relationships with students and interact with students and adults in a respectful manner.
  • Collaborate with administration to maintain the vision of the Strategic Goals and purpose of the club/activity.
  • Use appropriate channels to resolve concerns and problems.
  • Complete all training and certification required by the District.
  • Other duties as required.
  • Work with community members to enhance the program offerings, mentor the students, and assist in fundraiser and community service activities.
  • Assist with writing college letters of recommendation for students per their request.
  • Communicate all student achievements and accomplishments within the program to the activity director in a timely fashion so that they can be highlighted in parent/staff and student communication.

Job Requirements/Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS: Organizational skills and initiative for working with minimal direct supervision. Must show evidence of strong leadership and organizational skills.
KNOWLEDGE: Previous successful experience in sponsorship/mentoring preferred. Substantial knowledge in the area of student support, as well as familiarity with student discipline and safety protocols.
ABILITY: Establish and maintain positive and supportive working relationships with all stakeholders to be flexible and change as needed.

Stipend Range based on 1.0 FTE: $2,981 - $4,995

Stipend is subject to the collective bargaining agreement attached here.
