Job summary

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is seeking a Director, External Affairs & Communications, Overdose Prevention based in Washington, DC. You will lead communications campaigns across media, social channels, and partner organizations to advance overdose prevention policies.

You will work with state and federal decision makers, develop materials, and oversee vendors while coordinating with a broad coalition of public health advocates.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years of relevant communications/public relations experience.
  • Experience in developing and implementing communications strategies in a policy advocacy, political or government context.
  • Excellent writing, editing and project management skills.
  • Excellent communications, interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and coalition partners.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple and changing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to the issue of overdose prevention.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of communications strategies for the Overdose Prevention Initiative.
  • Coordinate with leadership, the Overdose Prevention Initiative team, and coalitions.
  • Oversee communications vendors and manage earned media, design and related work.
  • Draft, edit and distribute earned media materials, including press releases and op-eds.
  • Build strategic partnerships and provide strategic/technical assistance to advocates.
  • Conduct media outreach and arrange interviews; plan press conferences and events.
  • Update website materials and stay current on substance use disorder issues.
  • Assist with speechwriting, conference presentations, and funder reporting.
