Job summary

JTL-Software GmbH is seeking a Head of Product Design to own the design vision, quality bar, and team. You will build the design function of a profitable cloud-focused company, leading 7 designers in a triad with product management and engineering, and partnering with leadership to align operating models and standards.

The role is remote-first within Germany with occasional on-site days in Hürth/Berlin for workshops and planning.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in product design with 4+ years leading designers, ideally in B2B SaaS or complex product environments.
• Proven org-building: you have leveled up a team through hiring, development and clear standards.
• A strong personal craft foundation: you can review interaction and visual work credibly, set the bar in critique, and go hands-on when it matters.
• Research maturity: extensive experience building research practice and methodology, not just operating within a function that was already in place.
• Operating-model fluency: you have established design as an embedded, equal partner in empowered product teams (triad with PM and Engineering)
• Business orientation: you link experience quality to business metrics and can make design's impact legible to leadership.
• You use AI as a natural part of your craft and leadership – from research synthesis to prototyping.
• Experience building or scaling a design system is a strong plus.
• Fluency in English; B1 German is required, with the ability to communicate in German in everyday situations.

Responsibilities

• You own the design vision and principles for JTL's design org and align them with product strategy.
• You build the design function toward its target operating model: product-embedded designers in a triad with PM and Engineering.
• You plan design capacity across product teams and secure a dedicated slot for chapter work in quarterly planning; you own sourcing, onboarding, and briefing freelancers when needed.
• You lead and develop the design team: set expectations per level, provide feedback, hire senior talent, and build structure as the org grows.
• You set the quality bar for craft and research: establish research standards, ops and tooling, and a visible business impact.
• You shape the design system from the design side, in close partnership with Engineering, and drive its adoption across a broad product portfolio.
• You own cross-product experience coherence and arbitrate conflicts between teams.
• You scale AI-enabled ways of working across design – for craft and product experience.
