Qualifications

About the Role

Our client, a prominent player in the mining services sector, is seeking a seasoned and strategic Head of Operations to lead and manage all operational facets for their facility in Welkom, Free State . This is a leadership role responsible for driving operational efficiency, ensuring the highest safety standards, and optimizing resource utilization within a demanding industry. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in mining operations, a strong command of logistical and supply chain management, and a proven ability to manage large teams and complex projects. This role is based in the heart of the Welkom mining region and is critical to the success and growth of our client's operations. We are looking for an individual with a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within the mining sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct and oversee all operational activities within the Welkom facility, ensuring alignment with company strategy and objectives.
• Develop and implement operational plans that enhance efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness in mining operations.
• Ensure strict adherence to safety, health, and environmental (SHE) regulations and company policies.
• Manage and optimize supply chain and logistics for raw materials, equipment, and finished products.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a diverse team of operational professionals, fostering a culture of safety, performance, and continuous improvement.
• Monitor operational performance against KPIs, analyze data, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
• Oversee the maintenance and operational readiness of all plant and equipment.
• Manage operational budgets and control expenditures effectively, identifying cost‑saving opportunities.
• Foster strong relationships with stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, suppliers, and local communities.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Operations Management, or a related technical field.
• An advanced degree is highly desirable.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in operations management within the mining or heavy industry sector, with a significant portion in a leadership role.
• Demonstrated expertise in mine operations, logistics, supply chain management, and safety protocols.
• Proven ability to manage large operational teams and complex projects in a demanding environment.
• Strong financial acumen and experience in budget management and cost control.
• Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in mining‑specific software and operational management systems.
• A thorough understanding of South African mining regulations and best practices.
• Willingness to reside in or commute regularly to Welkom, Free State .
