Loft Orbital seeks a Director of Embedded Systems & FPGA Engineering to shape the hardware-software-platform foundations across satellite platforms. You will guide the abstraction layers and interfaces, enabling evolution across processors, FPGAs, operating systems, hypervisors, RISC-V, Rust, and future tech.

You will lead experienced engineers at the intersection of hardware, firmware, software, systems, and operations.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in embedded systems, FPGA, firmware or related engineering with mission-critical delivery.
• Proven experience leading and managing geographically distributed technical teams.
• Deep FPGA design, embedded C/C++, real-time systems, and HW/SW integration.
• Experience designing HW abstractions and hardware-agnostic interfaces.
• Strong Linux kernel and embedded Linux experience including drivers and debugging.
• Yocto/OpenEmbedded and CI/CD experience with reproducible releases.
• Experience building secure environments including trust boundaries and secure boot.
• Experience with hypervisors, RISC-V, ARM, and Rust in development environments.
• Track record of trade-offs among reliability, performance, security, and schedule.
• Collaborative leadership enabling leads and cross-company technical representation.

Responsabilités

• Own the ESW and FPGA roadmap and technical direction across Loft’s satellite platforms.
• Define HW-abstraction architecture and interfaces across FPGA, embedded software, onboard software, and operational layers.
• Drive hardware-agnostic and reusable platform capabilities to improve team independence.
• Support ESW and FPGA leads with clear direction, context, coaching, and blocker removal.
• Set expectations for architecture reviews, code quality, testing, verification, and readiness.
• Build the core foundation for Linux, Yocto/OpenEmbedded, CI/CD, reproducible builds, and secure environments.
• Guide technology choices around hypervisors, RISC‑V, Rust, and platform technologies for durable value.
• Act as the face of ESW and FPGA for cross-company issues, dependencies, and trade-offs.
• Manage and develop distributed leads and teams, including hiring, mentorship, and performance.
• Represent Loft with customers, partners, and government or defense stakeholders when required.
