Zero is the world's leading fasting app, with over 10 million users on a journey toward better metabolic health. Zero has a massive audience and a trusted brand and is now building a powerful new product to live alongside Zero. With this new product, the company is entering an exciting next chapter—where AI, coaching, and metabolic health intersect.

About the Role

Zero is looking for a hands-on, full-stack Head of Design to help bring a major new product to life. This person will lead design for Zero's next-generation app at the intersection of AI, coaching, and metabolic health—working directly with the CEO and a small, scrappy team.

The selected candidate will do it all: user research, UX flows, high-fidelity designs, prototyping, AI feature spec’ing, writing microcopy, and helping plan experiments. They will balance ambitious ideas with practical shipping, building simple, effective experiences that meet user needs and business goals.

This is a “player-coach” role: the candidate must love doing the work personally, not just leading it.

What This Role Entails

1. Own the end-to-end design of the new product: research, UX, UI, prototyping, visual design, specifications
2. Develop deep user understanding and apply it to all aspects of design
3. Work closely with the CEO and engineers to prioritize, spec, and ship high-quality features
4. Define and test genAI-powered product experiences
5. Create polished, usable, beautiful interfaces in Figma
6. Plan and validate experiments and analytics tracking
7. Adapt quickly, balancing vision with real-world constraints

Who Zero Is Looking For

1. Must be located in and authorized to work in the U.S.
2. Experienced startup product designer with a background in research, UX, and visual design
3. Possesses a strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end work and measurable impact on building consumer subscription products
4. Enjoys building early-stage products and can thrive amidst ambiguity, speed, and change
5. Fluent in Figma and prototyping tools (Play, Framer, etc.); bonus for knowledge of Lottie, Rive, or Spline
6. Excited about using AI tools in product development and design
7. Proactive, resourceful, flexible, and always learning

This is not the right role for candidates who:

1. Prefer only leading teams instead of doing hands-on design work
2. Require a big team or big-company structure to thrive
3. Are not comfortable working quickly and independently in a startup environment

Compensation

The salary for the Head of Design role at Zero will be determined based on where the candidate is placed on Zero's design career path. The average starting salary will be between $150,000 and $175,000, with adjustments based on location. Geographic differentials ensure pay reflects cost of living—so salaries are typically higher in places like San Francisco or New York, and lower in smaller or more affordable markets. Final offers will depend on location, experience, the interview process, equity with other team members, and market benchmarks. This role also includes equity and comprehensive benefits.
