Equity L / S Hedge Fund – New York, United States

A high-performing equity L / S hedge fund based in New York City is seeking a Head of Data Science to lead a small, specialized team directly supporting a group of fundamental portfolio managers and analysts.

This team leverages a wide range of alternative datasets and applies sophisticated statistical and machine learning techniques to uncover alpha signals, build analytical tools, automate processes, and improve portfolio construction. The Head of Data Science will be a key strategic partner to the investment teams, driving innovation and measurable commercial impact.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead, mentor, and scale a high-caliber team of data scientists focused on actionable investment insights.
2. Collaborate closely with fundamental PMs and analysts to integrate data science into investment workflows.
3. Drive the exploration and application of alternative data to develop proprietary signals and tools.
4. Operate as a thought leader at the intersection of data science, technology, and fundamental investing.

Ideal Candidate Profile

1. Minimum of a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Sciences, or a related quantitative discipline.
2. At least 5 years of relevant experience in a hedge fund, alternative data provider, private equity, or venture capital firm.
3. Deep understanding of equity long / short markets, with particular interest in candidates experienced in healthcare and consumer sectors.
4. Advanced programming skills in Python; familiarity with relevant data science and ML libraries required.
5. Excellent communication and presentation skills; proven ability to work cross-functionally between technical and investment teams.
6. Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to inspire, manage, and grow a high-performance team.
