Job summary

Kents Hill School is seeking a Head Mountain Biking Coach to lead a comprehensive, safe, and skill-driven program with daily instruction, trail maintenance, risk management, and mentorship of student-athletes.

Ideal candidates will bring at least two years of racing or coaching experience, WFR/WFA with CPR certification, leadership in a boarding school or youth camp setting, and strong bike mechanics knowledge. A valid driver's license is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two years of racing, guiding, or coaching experience.
• Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification with CPR.
• Strong knowledge of trailside bike mechanics (drivetrain, brakes, suspension).
• Valid driver's license is required.

Position Overview

Kents Hill School is seeking a Head Mountain Biking Coach to lead a comprehensive, safe, and skill-driven program. Responsibilities include daily instruction, trail maintenance, risk management, and mentoring student-athletes.

Kents Hill School is a member of NEMBA, the New England Mountain Bike Association, a prominent regional nonprofit dedicated to promoting responsible riding and building sustainable trails.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys mentoring young athletes while helping build a competitive and inclusive mountain biking program within an independent boarding school environment.

Coaching & Instruction

• Design and implement progressive, age-appropriate training plans for cross-country (XC) and enduro riders.
• Teach fundamental and advanced mountain biking techniques, including bike handling, climbing, descending, cornering, and trail etiquette.
• Provide instruction and mentorship that promotes skill development, confidence, sportsmanship, and safe riding practices.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive team environment.

Team Operations

• Manage race schedules and coordinate travel logistics for regional prep school competitions.
• Oversee routine equipment maintenance to ensure bicycles and team equipment remain safe and race-ready.
• Communicate schedules, expectations, and other team information with student-athletes and families as needed.

Organizational Skills & Time Management

• Maintain an organized practice and competition schedule.
• Effectively coach and supervise student-athletes with varying skill levels and riding experience.
• Demonstrate strong organizational skills while balancing practices, competitions, travel, and equipment needs.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two (2) years of racing, guiding, or coaching experience.
• Prior experience working in a boarding school, independent school, or youth camp environment is highly preferred.
• Current Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification with CPR.
• Strong working knowledge of modern trailside bike mechanics, including drivetrain repair, brake bleeds, suspension setup, and routine trailside repairs.
• A valid driver's license is required.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to ride and lead extended group rides in varying New England weather conditions.
• Ability to navigate technical trails and varying terrain while supervising student-athletes.Ability to lift, load, and transport bicycles and equipment as needed.

Time Commitment

• Five practices per week, lasting approximately 90-120 minutes each day.
• One race per week throughout the season.
• Race locations vary from approximately 30 minutes to three hours from campus and require travel with the team.
