Job summary

City Colleges of Chicago’s Olive-Harvey College is seeking a Head Lifeguard – Part-Time to supervise lifeguards, oversee water surveillance and enforce swimming rules, ensuring safe patron experiences.

The role requires a High School Diploma and American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid certification, plus prior lifeguard or swim instruction experience. This is a part-time union position with flexible hours, paid at $17.05 per hour.

HEAD LIFEGUARD – PART-TIME

OLIVE-HARVEY COLLEGE

Primary Objective: Supervises lifeguards on duty and assistsAquatics Director as needed. This position also provides watersurveillance and swimming rule enforcements ensuring the safety ofswimming patrons.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervises lifeguards on duty and schedules lifeguardhours.
2. Communicates staff and equipment needs to facilitymanagement.
3. Assists the Aquatic Director with hiring of newlifeguards.
4. Provides water surveillance and swimming rule enforcementensuring the safety of patrons participating in recreationalswimming activities, learn-to-swim classes, or competitive swimtraining, swim meets, or other aquatic facility activities.
5. Watches for unusual activities on the part of swimmers and isable to recognize struggling swimmers, drowning swimmers,distressed swimmers, and swimmers with sudden medical conditionssuch as stroke, heart attack, asthma, diabetes, or seizures alongwith the ability to recognize potential emergency conditions orsituations.
6. Provides rapid response lifesaving swim rescue and basicfirst-aid treatment and CPR administration, if required.
7. Fills out incident report forms after accidents or injuriesproactively collecting witness names and numbers.
8. Maintains safe and clean aquatic facilities along with propermaintenance of life saving equipment and related materials andsupplies.
9. Participates in in-service training to maintain life guardingskills.
10. Wears appropriate uniform, attire, and life-saving gear for theposition.
11. Exhibits public respect and enthusiasm as duties andresponsibilities are carried out in all work environments.
12. Adheres to the City Colleges of Chicago Customer ServiceExcellence Standards.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma required. American Red Cross Lifeguardingand First Aid Certification or adequate certification is aplus.
2. Lifeguard must be in good physical and mental condition toprovide life saving services.
3. Prior experience as junior lifeguard, certified lifeguard, orswimming instructor.
4. Prior experience with and proficient use of lifesavingequipment; basic first aid kit, CPR mask, rescue buoy or rescuetube.
5. Delivery of effective verbal and written communications andtakes responsibility for understanding others, multilingual skillsa plus.
6. Flexibility to work outside normal college business hours,weekends, or holidays.
7. Able to exercise independent judgment and respond calmly tohigh-pressure emergency situations.
8. Ability to work in a team environment with flexible work hoursas needed for scheduled college events.
9. Promotes a positive role model and favorable public image asCity Colleges of Chicago representative. Salary: $17.05/hr
