Job summary

City of Des Moines is seeking a part-time lifeguard to safeguard pool patrons at Reichardt Community Recreation Center and outdoor pools during the summer. You will assign lifeguards, maintain schedules, monitor for hazards, and respond to emergencies.

Requires at least 18 years old and American Red Cross Lifeguard Training with CPR certification (or ability to obtain by start date). Background checks apply; a valid driver's license or mobility is required.

Responsibilities

• Performs all duties of the Lifeguard position.

• Assists with pool maintenance and staff scheduling.
• Assumes managerial tasks in the manager's absence.
• Performs related work as required.

General Statement of Duties

Under general supervision to safeguard swimming pool patrons, to insure proper use of pool facilities, to assign lifeguards and maintain lifeguard schedules, and to assume pool responsibility in the absence of the Recreation Program Supervisor.

Permanent Part Time position (20 - 29 hours a week) and will be all year round at the Reichardt Community Recreation Center and various outdoor pools in the summer.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Must be at least 18 years old.

Required Special Qualifications

• Prior Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor experience preferred.
• Valid drivers license or equivalent mobility required.

Candidates are required to possess a valid and current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and CPR Certification or have the ability to obtain required certifications by employment date. Certifications may be obtained through the American Red Cross and must be valid through September 02, 2026.

Requires satisfactory criminal, sex offender and driving record background checks.
