Position Summary

Under the direction of the Assistant Recreation Manager -Aquatics, performs various tasks as necessary to provide recreation services to the St. George Community.

Essential Functions/Typical Working/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

  • Ensures the safety of staff and patrons at all times.
  • Keeps staff on task with job duties.
  • Closes and opens cash tills and performs shift register count-outs.
  • Conducts/Attends monthly meetings with management and staff.
  • Prevents injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
  • Enforces facility rules and regulations.
  • Recognizes and responds calmly, quickly and effectively to all emergencies, to your level of training.
  • Oversees Emergency Action Plans.
  • Administers first aid, ventilations, and CPR using rescue equipment.
  • Alerts, in a safe manner, other lifeguards and facility staff and management when more help or rescue equipment is needed.
  • Works special events as assigned.
  • Completes required records and reports and submits them to management.
  • Performs maintenance or other tasks assigned by supervisors.
  • Inspects the facility daily and reports any unsafe conditions or equipment to supervisor.
  • Checks patrons into Aquatic Facilities and registers participants for classes and activities. Performs money handling duties according to city and division policies and procedures.
  • Promotes pass sales by informing patrons of pass options.
  • May be required to work other positions at the facilities that you are qualified to work.
  • Handles minor employee and patron issues when supervisors are not on duty or at that specific site and then reports back to supervisor.
  • Checks vehicles each night to ensure cleanliness and security.
  • Wears appropriate uniform during assigned shift.
  • While a Head Lifeguard may coordinate daily operational tasks and assignments, all formal personnel actions—including but not limited to performance evaluations, disciplinary measures, and compensation adjustments—are the sole responsibility of the Recreation Supervisor and/or Recreation Manager. In accordance with Utah Code 52-3-1, if the appointee is a relative or household member of a Head Lifeguard, that Head Lifeguard is strictly prohibited from evaluating the appointee’s job performance or recommending salary increases.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions and temperatures may vary depending on the assignment. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies. Moderately heavy physical activity required to push, pull, or lift 20-60 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, noise, dust, chemicals, and fumes. Moderate risk of bodily injury under normal conditions. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior. Note: Often works irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Emergency call-back may be required in this position. Individuals in this position must wear suitable attire, which for females mandates an athletic one piece suit, for males mandates suitable swim trunks. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging 28 or less hours per week over a period of twelve months

Qualifications
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Preference given to those with education in recreation or a related field.

Experience
  • Minimum of one year experience working in programs and special events for the City of St. George, or a similar organization, showing adequate knowledge and skill in assigned tasks
  • Minimum of one year experience using Sportsman SQL, or similar registration management software platform, showing adequate knowledge and skill in assigned tasks preferred
  • Experience working at the St. George Aquatic Facilities and/or a different Aquatic/Community Facility totaling a minimum of 9 months required
  • Customer service experience preferred
Licenses and/or Certifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment. Valid out-of-state drivers licenses may be accepted for active out-of-state students paying out-of-state tuition. Supporting documentation must be submitted to your supervisor each semester for approval.
  • American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding and Professional Rescuer First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • American Red Cross certification in Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • Must obtain Utah Food Handlers Permit within 60 days of hire which must be maintained throughout employment.

Note: Golf course privileges are based on availability. Employees can book a tee-time within 24 hours or the same day, but may be turned away if there are no available tee-times. If you happen to be golfing with at least 2 paying customers; tee times can be set with more advance notice, but are still based on availability. Red Hills Golf Course will not be available to schedule tee times in advance --- walk on play based on availability only.
