Job summary

City of St. George is seeking a part-time Recreation Assistant to support softball programs, leagues, and special events. You will supervise part-time staff, assist with registrations, and help promote programs while delivering excellent customer service on-site.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent, with preferred recreation-related education. Weekend and evening availability is required for events and offerings.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; preference for recreation-related education.
  • Experience in customer service is preferred.
  • Experience with registration systems or software is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees part-time staff and volunteers during shifts.
  • Provides customer service in person and by phone.
  • Assists in planning, developing, and evaluating programs and maintains relationships with contractors.
  • Registers participants for programs and events.
  • Performs general office and clerical duties.
  • Supports promotion and advertising of programs and events.
  • Maintains facilities and prepares materials for distribution.
  • Works on site for events and programs, including weekends.

Job description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, performs various tasks as necessary to provide recreation services to the St. George Community. This position will primarily work with Softball Programs including leagues and tournaments, and help with Special Events as required.

Essential Functions/Typical Working/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

  • Oversees the work of other part time employees and volunteers during assigned shifts or tasks
  • Assists in staff training, assignments, recruiting, and evaluation of staff
  • Provide customer service in person and over the phone; answering questions and/or referring customers to appropriate staff members
  • Responds to public inquiries providing accurate information regarding recreation programs and services
  • Assists the Recreation Supervisor with planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs and helps to maintain relationships with program contractors
  • May be delegated tasks normally performed by FT employees
  • Aids in the promotion and advertising of programs and special events
  • Registers participants for programs, classes and activities
  • General office and clerical duties
  • Copies and prepares various brochures, flyers, schedules, rosters, etc. for distribution
  • Organizes, cleans, prepares and maintains recreation facilities and other work areas
  • Works programs and special events taking charge in part or whole of assigned programs, events, or facilities
  • Runs errands
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing other related duties as needed
  • Follow all city policies and procedures
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions and temperatures may vary depending on the assignment. Requires the use of vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies. Requires moderately heavy physical activity exerting 25-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Mental demands of intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Note:

Must be available to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and other schedules to help prepare for recreation offerings. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging less than 28 hours per week over a period of twelve months.

Qualifications
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent. Preference given to those with education in recreation or a related field.

Experience
  • Minimum of one year experience working in leagues, tournaments, and events for the City of St. George, or a similar organization, showing adequate knowledge and skill in assigned tasks
  • Minimum of one year experience using Sportsman SQL, or similar registration management software platform, showing adequate knowledge and skill in assigned tasks preferred
  • Customer service experience preferred
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification required. Must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.

  • Free access to all 4 city golf courses (Dixie Red Hills, Southgate, St. George Golf Club, and Sunbrook), swimming pools (City Pool and Sand Hollow Aquatic Center) and recreation center is available to all part-time employees.
  • Note: Golf course privileges are based on availability. Employees can book a tee-time within 24 hours or the same day, but may be turned away if there are no available tee-times. If you happen to be golfing with at least 2 paying customers; tee times can be set with more advance notice, but are still based on availability. Red Hills Golf Course will not be available to schedule tee times in advance --- walk on play based on availability only.
