Job description

Position Summary:

Provides leadership in maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool(s), on the pool deck(s), and in surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety, engagement, youth development, and healthy living, in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. While on duty, responsible for ensuring lifeguards meet essential job functions. Assists the Aquatics Director with supervision and administrative duties.

Essential Functions:

1. Knows and understands all emergency procedures; responds immediately and appropriately to emergencies, following YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.
2. Enforces safety rules, swim testing procedures, policies, and guidelines for the pools and aquatics areas.
3. Performs maintenance of pools and surrounding areas to ensure safety and cleanliness, including vacuuming, cleaning pool tiles, and trash pickup.
4. Conducts pool chemical testing, maintains accurate records as per YMCA standards and health department codes.
5. Performs daily equipment checks and ensures availability of necessary equipment.
6. Monitors for hazards when arriving and continuously assesses risks to prevent accidents.
7. Maintains required certifications according to YMCA standards and policies.
8. Attends all staff meetings and trainings, including at least four hours of in-service per month.
9. Maintains vigilant surveillance, notices potential victims within 10 seconds, and executes rescues within 20 seconds.
10. Builds effective relationships with members, participants, and staff; communicates rules and policies firmly, fairly, and tactfully, utilizing the 'Q-1-2' customer service technique.
11. Provides leadership and guidance to other lifeguards.
12. Assists with aquatics audits, drills, and skill evaluations.
13. Supports scheduling and in-service training for lifeguards.
14. Ensures opening and closing procedures are completed; documents incidents, accidents, member concerns, and equipment needs.
15. Assists in obtaining substitutes and notifies the Director of schedule changes.
16. Reports suspicious behaviors and policy violations; follows mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
17. Meets deadlines related to employee compliance and supporting systems, such as Kronos Workforce Ready for timesheet approvals.

Qualifications:

• Minimum age of 18 years.
• At least one season of lifeguarding experience.
• Demonstrates YMCA lifeguard skills per policies.
• Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification; obtain YMCA certification within 30 days of hire.
• Obtain or hold prior to first shift: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, Child Abuse Prevention, and other specified certifications.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse community groups.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, interpret, retain, and teach safety and maintenance instructions; communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations.

Reasoning Ability:

Apply common sense, sound judgment, and confidentiality; effectively handle problems and follow policies.

Physical Demands:

Regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands; lift up to 50 pounds; perform rescues; maintain alertness and clear vision; communicate verbally in various situations.
