Join to apply for the Lead Lifeguard - Lake Houston role at YMCA of Greater Houston.

Position Summary:
Provides leadership in maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool(s), on the pool deck(s), and in surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development, and healthy living in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Responsible for ensuring lifeguards meet essential job functions while on duty.

Essential Functions:

  1. Responds immediately and appropriately to emergency situations, following YMCA standards, policies, and procedures.
  2. Enforces safety rules, swim testing procedures, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatics areas.
  3. Performs maintenance to ensure safety and cleanliness, including vacuuming, cleaning pool deck, tiles, and trash pickup.
  4. Conducts pool chemical testing, maintains accurate records as per YMCA standards and health department codes.
  5. Performs daily equipment checks and ensures availability of appropriate equipment.
  6. Monitors for hazards to prevent accidents before they occur.
  7. Maintains all required certifications in accordance with YMCA policies.
  8. Attends all staff meetings and trainings, including at least four hours of in-service per month.
  9. Maintains vigilant surveillance, noticing potential victims within 10 seconds and executing effective rescues within 20 seconds.
  10. Builds effective relationships with members and staff, communicating rules firmly, fairly, and tactfully using customer service techniques.
  11. Assists with aquatics audits, drills, and skill evaluations.
  12. Provides leadership and guidance to other lifeguards.
  13. Reports suspicious behaviors and policy violations, following mandated reporting requirements.
  14. Supports timelines and deadlines for employee compliance and system reviews.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • At least one season of lifeguarding experience.
  • Demonstrated lifeguard skills per YMCA policies.
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification; obtain YMCA Lifeguard certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Obtain or hold prior to first shift: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, Child Abuse Prevention, and other specified certifications.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse community groups.

Skills include reading, interpreting, and teaching safety and maintenance instructions; effective communication; basic math; sound judgment; confidentiality; and physical ability to perform rescues and withstand physical demands of the role.

The physical demands include standing, walking, talking, hearing, handling objects, climbing, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Must have adequate vision and hearing for monitoring the environment and performing rescues.
