The Head Lifeguard is responsible for the guarding and safety of members and program participants within all aquatic facilities. This role will be responsible for carrying out and enforcing aquatic policies and procedures in compliance with statutes as described by the State of Pennsylvania, the YMCA of the USA, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, lifeguard licensing agency Ellis and Associates, and YMCA insurance representative. Head Lifeguards will also manage aquatic facility operations including, but not limited to: supporting the lifeguard team, maintaining the facility, and planning and conducting inservice training.

What You’ll Do
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area.
- Know and review all emergency procedures and respond immediately to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Complete related reports as required.
- Maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and staff.
- Understand and apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and the state Health Department.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival and closing.
- Perform chemical testing at appropriate times and take necessary actions.
- Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- Act as a liaison for lifeguard staff to aquatic leadership.
- Support conduct of trainings and emergency drills including Vigilant Awareness Training.
- Report safety, staffing, or facility issues to supervisor.
- Ensure lifeguard team follows established procedures and emergency action plans.
- Identify hazards and unsafe practices, recommend measures to minimize or eliminate hazards.
- Ensure swim test policies are followed.
- Communicate professionally with members, including those who are uncooperative or concerned.
- Educate members and staff about facility rules and regulations.
- Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 or older
- Current lifeguarding certification from Ellis & Associates
- Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogens certifications
- Complete required monthly in-service hours of Ellis & Associates training and scanning skills
- Ability to lead, motivate, earn respect, and demonstrate maturity in relating to people of all ages and abilities
- Obtain and maintain all additional certifications and trainings within 90 days of hire
Work Conditions and Physical Demands
The physical demands include performing all skills required of a lifeguard, hearing noises and distress signals, remaining alert, and observing all areas of responsibility. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.
