Head Librarian and Learning Resource Coordinator

Position Title

Description At Chattanooga College MDTC, the Head Librarian and Learning Resource Coordinator will help implement our strategy of “Where a small school can make a BIG difference!!”

The Head Librarian and Learning Resource Coordinator will provide leadership and management of library and Learning Resource Center services to campus-based and online students and faculty to support instruction, research, academic achievement, and professional preparation. This includes responsibilities such as resource development, information literacy instruction, research assistance, digital access management, and academic support coordination. Ideal candidates must have excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and listening skills. Candidates must be able to adapt to a fast-paced work environment and manage multiple priorities and changing assignments.

This is a professional position supporting the Library and Learning Resource Center department. This role requires considerable interaction with students, faculty, staff, and external partners through individual meetings, group sessions, and/or events. Head Librarian and Learning Resource Coordinators are expected to possess extensive knowledge of electronic databases, library catalogs and systems, collection development, academic policies, and copyright guidelines. They must be able to interpret individual needs, provide personalized support, and work effectively with individuals who may be confused, stressed, or demanding.

Employees in this role can expect to assist individuals regarding research assistance, database searching, source evaluation, citation practices, and study skills, assist with decision-making related to information resources and learning support, and help guide individuals toward successful outcomes. This position requires maintaining confidentiality and accurate records to ensure compliance with accreditation standards, institutional policies, and federal regulations (e.g., FERPA, as applicable). The role may also support institutional events such as Orientation, workshops, library orientations, and outreach activities. A strong commitment to equity, access, opportunity, affordability, upward mobility, and success for underrepresented or at-risk populations is essential.

Responsibilities
  • Provides research, instruction, and resource support to a diverse population of students and faculty, including regular contact regarding academic progress and resource needs.
  • Implements institutional or departmental strategic priorities related to resource adequacy, information literacy, engagement, accreditation compliance, and academic success.
  • Counsels, advises, or supports individuals through individual research consultations, workshops, and group sessions to address research and learning support concerns.
  • Educates individuals on institutional library resources, databases, search techniques, policies, and responsible use of information and AI tools.
  • Implements solutions, including library systems, learning management system links, and digital access technology, to promote efficiency, access, and academic success.
  • Completes required professional development and training annually.
  • Supports department-wide and student services initiatives, including coordinating access to tutoring and study-skills services.
  • Maintains accurate catalog, inventory, and documentation records in compliance with institutional, accreditation, and federal requirements.
  • Collaborates with departments and colleagues—including Campus Directors, Deans, Program Directors, IT, Student Services, and Academic Advising—to increase engagement, retention, and success, especially for at-risk populations.
  • Provides appropriate referrals for personal, social, and/or academic concerns that may impair success.
  • Upholds confidentiality and complies with institutional policies, copyright laws, accessibility standards, and federal regulations.
  • Assists with planning and coordination of events such as Orientation, workshops, library orientations, and campus outreach activities.
  • Maintains tools, library systems, print and digital collections, computers, and learning spaces necessary to effectively perform job duties.
  • Remains current on relevant state and federal guidelines, resource licensing, emerging best practices, and research related to the role.
  • Collaborates with the Provost.

  • Ability to use technology to support services, including Microsoft Office, library management systems, learning management platforms, and digital research tools.
Education & Experience
Education or Training:
  • Required: Master’s degree in library science or library and information science (MLS/MLIS).
Experience:
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional library experience in academic library services, collection development, or coordination of learning resources.
  • Experience in healthcare, allied health, nursing, or career and technical education libraries preferred.
  • Experience supervising staff, managing budgets, supporting hybrid/online learners, or coordinating services across multiple campuses preferred.
  • Experience with accreditation evidence, program resource assessments, evidence-based practice instruction, and tutoring or academic support coordination preferred.
