Job summary

Bethel School District is seeking an Elementary School Head Custodian to supervise a custodial staff of up to three and ensure a clean, safe, and well-maintained facility for students and staff.

This position follows the PSE salary schedule Level 9, with 8 hours per day and 260 school days per year. The head custodian will prepare buildings for school and public events and coordinate operations to support learning environments.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee cleaning of assigned areas to provide a sanitary environment for learning and support functions.
  • Open/close facility and secure doors, operate alarm and lights as required.
  • Set up and remove equipment and furniture for events and gatherings.

  • Conduct safety drills and inspections; monitor emergency lighting and batteries.
  • Supervise night shift custodians and maintain time records.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on fixtures, equipment and building systems.
  • Lead major summer cleaning and prepare buildings for the new school year.
  • Monitor overtime, time cards, and building usage schedules.
  • Clean and prepare lunchrooms for meals and monitor student behavior as needed.
  • Maintain custodial budget and inventory; coordinate building usage as needed.
  • Maintain and distribute building keys and signage; monitor reader boards.
  • Operate HVAC and related equipment; service boilers and pumps as required.

THIS POSITION IS FOR 8 HOURS PER DAY AT 260 DAYS PER YEAR.
PAY FOR THIS POSITION: PSE SALARY SCHEDULE LEVEL 9 $ 29.23
Description

This position's responsibilities are to maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security of an assigned elementary school facility. The elementary head custodian will provide direction to a custodial staff smaller than three custodians and will prepare the building for school and public events.

Essential Functions

Depending upon the individual assignment, the Head Custodian may perform all or a combination of the following:

  • Cleans specific areas and oversees the cleaning of assigned school or comparable facility to provide a sanitary and safe environment for student learning and support functions; vacuums, dusts, mops, sweeps, cleans bathrooms and showers, picks up and empties trash, changes light bulbs, fills soap and paper products containers, removes graffiti and provides a wide variety of cleaning and custodial services.
  • Opens facility; turns on lights and equipment; takes out mailbox and flag. Opens and/or locks building doors and operates alarm system for security according to established procedures.
  • Sets up and takes down a wide variety of equipment and furniture for events, assemblies, food service, public use of school facilities and other functions; moves a variety of equipment and furniture as needed to meet the needs of students, staff and the public. Assists teachers, students and administrators in locating needed equipment. Provides emergency cleaning.
  • Maintains effective communication with students, parents, staff and the public for safety, security and public relations.
  • Conducts fire and earthquake drills; accompanies fire marshal during inspections; prepares necessary reports. Inspects emergency lighting and batteries.
  • Provides direction, trains and oversees work of night shift staff of fewer than three custodians; resolves or reports personnel conflicts. Keeps custodial time records.
  • Makes minor repairs, such as painting, plastering, stain and gum removal, fixing chair feet and table legs, replacing acoustical tile, clearing drains and toilets and fixing leaks. Cleans and replaces heat pump and univent filters.
  • Performs major summer cleaning of facility, including floor finishes, furniture, equipment, painting and repairs to prepare buildings for the start of the student school year.
  • Determines cleaning areas and assignments. Assigns overtime, fills out variance and vacation slips; monitors time cards.
  • Sets up and cleans lunchroom for breakfast and lunch. May be required to monitor student behavior.
  • Maintains custodial budget; orders custodial supplies. Keeps records of work orders, inspections, and building usage. May schedule and coordinate building usage.
  • Maintains and distributes building keys. Prepares signage and changes reader board.
  • Operates heating ventilation systems and controls in facility; maintains boilers, pumps, and compressors as required.
Other Functions
  • Operates or uses hydraulic lift, ladders, scaffolding, blowers, floor polishers, power tools and other equipment.
  • Moves supplies and materials as needed. Signs for and receives deliveries.
  • May be on off hours contact list to respond to facility emergencies.
  • Serves on school committees and councils related to safety and security of facility.
  • Provides supervision to student helpers as assigned; trains, monitors, and corrects students in custodial tasks.
  • Assists with the maintenance of grounds as needed by sweeping walkways, removing litter, clearing ice or snow, and related maintenance of an attractive school facility; may perform minor weeding of grounds.
  • May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the Assistant Director or Manager of Facilities. Receives guidance from school administrator; provides guidance to facility custodial staff.

MENTAL DEMANDS

Experiences frequent interruptions; required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors; required to shift focus to respond to student, staff and public needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Required to stand for prolonged periods; sometimes Required to stand for prolonged periods; sometimes required to move heavy objects such as furniture or equipment that may weigh more than fifty (50) pounds; required to operate power equipment such as buffers and scrubbers; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to cleaning and stripping compounds and fumes; exposed to noise from power equipment; positions occasionally performing grounds maintenance may require periodically working outdoors in inclement weather; potentially exposed to ordinary diseases carried by students; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids; may be required to be on call to return to work off hours for emergencies; may need to take precautions when inspecting cause of fire alarms; may deal with distraught or difficult individuals.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, including three (3) years' experience as a custodian, with two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity; experience in a school facility preferred.

Licenses/Special Requirements

Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor. Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan. Passage of a pre-placement physical and testing is required of this position (the district will assume the cost).
