Job summary

THE CITY OF PORTALES, NEW MEXICO
POSITION POSTING #2026-26
POSITION: HEAD CUSTODIAN
DEPARTMENT: PARKS
STATUS: NON-EXEMPT
REPORTS TO: PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE DEPUTY
SHIFT: FT REGULAR - 40 HOURS PER WEEK
SALARY: $14.56 PER HOUR/ $30,284.80 ANNUALLY
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Public Infrastructure Deputy, the Head Custodian is responsible for planning and supervising the work of other custodians. Work involves cleaning and minor maintenance work for various City buildings. Involves considerable amount of knowledge of custodial duties and custodial products. Carry out departmental and City policies in accordance with the City personnel policies and the policies of the supervisor who will visit the sites as he/she sees fit. Work involves light to heavy lifting as well as light maintenance on buildings and equipment. Willingness to work irregular hours, weekends, and as necessary holidays.

Although the following are typical of the are typical of the tasks and responsibilities routinely performed, additional tasks and/or responsibilities requiring comparable or lesser skills, knowledge, or dexterity may be assigned.

  1. Maintains inventory of cleaning products, tools, etc., and coordinates order and purchasing of items with supervisor.
  2. Sweeping, wet and dry mopping, stripping, washing and/or buffing floors, halls, and stairways.
  3. Vacuuming and shampooing rugs and carpet.
  4. Dusting and washing walls, ceilings, tables, vents, interior and exterior windows, desks, and lighting fixtures.
  5. Straightening office furniture and emptying waste receptacles.
  6. Changing light bulbs and performing minor electrical-mechanical maintenance repairs and related duties.
  7. Setting up chairs and rearranging furniture in preparation for meetings other special events to be held.
  8. Reporting immediately any and all equipment defects and or malfunctions.
  9. Collects trash, shovels snow, keeps grounds void of trash and debris, sweeps sidewalks, and maintains buildings exterior in a clean and orderly manner.
  10. Must occasionally be prepared for call-out work during nonscheduled working hours.
  11. May be required to attend seminars and classes to improve job skills.
  12. Attend safety classes as specified.
  13. Performs job duties in a way that promotes a positive image of the City and organization and the department; demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and delivers exemplary customer service.
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS:
  1. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of a High School Diploma.
  2. Previous experience in the use and care of custodial equipment and janitorial cleaning methods is preferred.
  3. Current New Mexico driver’s license.
  4. Must be in good physical condition (job requires some heavy lifting).
  5. Must be able to interact and work will with others.
  6. Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  7. Ability to follow through on work assignments.
  8. Must be at least 18 years of age.

Additional comments on Physical Requirements: Applicant must be able to lift 50 to 75 pounds. Work involves light to heavy lifting. Requires constant physical efforts at times. Safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND WORK AIDS USED:

Includes but not limited to:

  1. Floor buffer/stripper and pads, mops and buckets, brooms and dust pans, wet vac, and vacuum cleaner.
  2. Various waste containers.
  3. Various cleaning solutions and disinfectants.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  1. Ability to work both inside and outside.
  2. Ability to in all types of weather, extreme cold temperatures, extreme heat temperatures, and extreme wet/humid temperatures.
  3. Ability to work with intermittent noise levels. Noise levels may be moderate to loud in work environment.
  4. Ability to work with fumes, dust, and odors.
  5. Ability to work in multiple surfaces; even, flat/hard, inclined/ramps, uneven, stairs, dry wet, dust, and natural ground.
  6. Worker is exposed to vibration factors.
WORK SCHEDULE

The regular work week is 40 hours - Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Additional time may be required to work after regular hours, on weekends, and holidays.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Limited travel for meetings and training may be required.
  2. Overnight travel may be required.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Must pass a background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
  1. Candidates must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City’s insurance carrier.
  2. Employees must maintain a source of communications.
