Position Details
  • Title: Head Custodian
  • FLSA Status: Exempt
  • Responsible to: Director of Buildings and Grounds
  • Supervises: Custodians
  • Building Principal: Yes
  • Evaluated by: Building Principal
  • Terms of Employment: 260 days/year
Purpose of the Position

Responsible for the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the assigned building, ensuring facilities are maintained in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety. Supervises custodial staff, including seasonal employees, with a focus on safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma with leadership skills and supervisory experience
  • Team-oriented with effective communication skills
  • Willing to work various shifts and after-hours as needed
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery if required
Essential Functions
  • Perform and oversee repairs and maintenance of equipment, buildings, and grounds
  • Provide daily maintenance and cleaning, including snow/ice removal
  • Coordinate with principals and district officials on maintenance and supplies
  • Assign and supervise custodial staff work schedules
  • Inspect buildings and grounds regularly
  • Recruit, evaluate, and manage custodial and maintenance personnel
  • Maintain records and manage budgets
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs
  • Follow safety procedures and policies
Secondary Functions
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and functions of the school district and state education department
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks
  • Use independent judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Establish effective working relationships
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, hear, speak clearly
  • Lift items of 50 lbs. regularly and 100 lbs. occasionally
