Job summary

Theuniversityunion in Raleigh, NC seeks a Youth Counselor for a seasonal, part-time role to lead activities and build relationships with Track Out students under YMCA guidelines.

Flexibility for early morning or late afternoon shifts is required. Base pay is $11.00/hour, with an additional $2/hour in the Before School program, and dedication to safety and YMCA values is essential.

Qualifications

  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Experience working with children or teens is preferred.
  • Experience in outdoor education, planning activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports or recreational games is preferred.
  • Specific certifications and/or training may be required.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and builds relationships with a group of elementary and/or middle school Track Out students.
  • Implements activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and aligned with YMCA values.
  • Leads special activities for campers, including water and swim activities when applicable.
  • Creates a fun, safe, friendly and challenging atmosphere.
  • Mentors and models responsible behavior while guiding children in the program.
  • Maintains relationships with campers, parents, school staff and YMCA colleagues.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Develops relationships with community organizations and communicates clearly within responsibilities.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Youth Program Director, the Youth Counselor is responsible for leading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants in the program.

They are responsible for managing these functions in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

Job schedule (Days): Monday - Friday (Flexible Scheduling Options Available)
Job Schedule (Time): 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Additional Information: The position is a seasonal position designed for candidates who can work during WCPSS' Track 4 Break Schedule:
  • October 7-23
  • January 4-22
  • March 29-April 16

Candidates should have flexibility to work early morning and/or late afternoon shifts

In addition to this hourly rate, you will receive an additional $2/hour when working in the Before School program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Supervisesand builds relationships with a group of elementaryand/or middle schoolTrack Out students.
  • Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriateandconsistent with YMCA values.
  • Responsible for leading special activities for campers, which may include water and swim activities at participating sites.
  • Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe, friendly and challenging.
  • Mentors and models responsible behavior while leadingchildren inthe program.
  • Models and facilitates relationship-building skills in all interactionsand maintains positiverelationships with campers, parents, school staff and other YMCA staff.
  • Adheres toYMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinarysituations, child abuse prevention and emergency management.
  • Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of andleft in good, clean condition daily.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Previous experience working with children or teenspreferredbutnot required.
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning andorganizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games,etc.
  • Specific certifications and/or training may be required.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.
