Job summary

City of Port Aransas is seeking a Senior Lifeguard to patrol public beach areas and monitor activities to prevent unsafe behavior. The role includes rescuing swimmers in distress, administering first aid, and maintaining weather and beach condition records.

The Senior Lifeguard supervises other lifeguards, provides training, and coordinates with the Surf Rescue Manager to ensure safety standards are met. Applicants must have USLA lifeguard certification and CPR/First Aid.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Rescues distressed swimmers and administers first aid.
  • Monitors weather and beach conditions; maintains reports.
  • Operates radio to coordinate with emergency units.

Summary

Patrols public beach area to monitor activities of swimmers and prevent illegal conduct by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
  • Observes activities in assigned area on foot, in vehicle, or from tower or headquarters building with binoculars to detect hazardous conditions such as swimmers in distress, disturbances, or safety infractions.
  • Cautious people against use of unsafe beach areas or illegal conduct such as drinking or fighting.
  • Rescues distressed persons from ocean.
  • Examines injured individuals, administers first aid, and monitors vital signs.
  • Administers artificial respiration or provides oxygen to revive persons.
  • Compiles emergency and medical treatment report forms and maintains daily information on weather and beach conditions.
  • Operates switchboard or two-way radio system to maintain contact and coordinate activities between emergency rescue units.
  • Inventories/Assess medical equipment daily and orders when necessary.
  • Assesses Vehicles conditions daily and submits work orders when necessary.
  • Assists with training of practical lifesaving skills in the water.
  • Assists with training of Emergency Medical Responder skills in the classroom.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Senior Lifeguard is responsible for supervising the other Lifeguards and making sure subordinate Lifeguards are performing their job duties competently. Other responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, resolving problems, and bringing disciplinary problems to the Surf Rescue Manager.

Requirements
Qualifications

  • Must have at least one year of Lifeguarding experience from a USLA certified agency
  • Complete a Port Aransas Surf Rescue Rookie school
  • Must be able to pass a test of Lifeguard skills and knowledge
  • Must have current certifications in:
  • First Aid
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training
  • Pass a 500 meter swim in under 10 minutes
Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak in simple sentences.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

To perform the job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet software and word processing software for scheduling purposes.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Lifeguard certification from a nationally organization, First Aid Basics Certificate, CPR Certificate. Valid Texas Driver’s License in good standing

Other Skills and Abilities

Must be available for further certification such as Oxygen Administration Certificate, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer.

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Daily training may include running, jumping and swimming. USLA requires guards to swim 500 meters in less than 10 minutes. The employee occasionally is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. A swim and run test will be administered before an applicant is hired.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
