Position Summary

Responsible for providing quality instructional training / coaching to program participants. Persons in this position must closely adhere to the YMCA of the USA guidelines for competitive coaching and swimming. This person assists in the oversight of all swim team functions assisting the Swim Team Director.

Essential Functions
  • Act as the primary coach for the “Head Age” Group, including designing and implementing training plans, supervising swimmers and practices, preparing meet entries, and managing on-deck activities.
  • Assist the Swim Team Director with daily practices and swim meets for “Senior” and “Lower” groups.
  • Support administrative duties related to meet and practice schedules, travel, accommodations, and planning.
  • Maintain control of swimmer behavior and communicate behavioral issues to parents/guardians when necessary.
  • Adhere to scheduled practices and ensure safety by enforcing pool rules and guidelines.
  • Keep accurate records of swimmer evaluations at session start and end.
  • Communicate effectively with children and parents/guardians.
  • Maintain professionalism in attitude and appearance.
  • Be able to meet physical and emotional demands, including getting into the water for training.
  • Ensure a clean and safe environment, reporting hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Provide an emotionally secure environment for participants.
  • Coach all ages and levels with a positive attitude and give clear instructions.
  • Promote aquatics and YMCA programs.
  • Report concerns, repairs, or incidents to your supervisor.
  • Suggest improvements for the aquatics facility.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; a 2-year college degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, or related field is preferred.
  • Certifications include CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
  • At least 2 years of related experience with competitive swimming experience required.
  • Must obtain YMCA Swim Coach Certification and USA Swimming Coach Certification, with annual renewal.
  • Knowledge of competitive strokes, starts, and turns required.
  • American Swim Coaches Association Levels 1–3 certification preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year supervisory experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and YMCA internal software.
