The HDD Locator/Operator is responsible for locating and tracking the drill head during horizontal directional drilling operations for underground utility installation. This position requires strong, hands-on HDD locating experience, including maintaining bore path, depth, pitch, and alignment while safely navigating existing underground utilities. Drill operating experience is preferred, but strong HDD locating experience is the primary requirement for this position.Key ResponsibilitiesLocate and track the drill head throughout HDD bore operations.Monitor and maintain proper depth, pitch, direction, and bore alignment.Communicate continuously with the drill operator to make adjustments throughout the bore.Read and interpret bore plans, construction prints, utility maps, and job specifications.Identify existing underground utilities and maintain required clearances throughout drilling operations.Assist with bore planning and determine appropriate bore paths based on utilities, ground conditions, and project requirements.Perform and assist with potholing to visually verify existing utilities.Support pilot bores, reaming, pullbacks, and conduit/product installation.Recognize interference, signal issues, changing ground conditions, and other factors that may impact locating accuracy.Operate HDD equipment when needed and qualified.Assist with equipment setup, inspections, maintenance, restoration, and general crew responsibilities.Follow company, OSHA, DOT, and jobsite safety requirements.Qualifications3+ years of hands-on HDD locating experience preferred.Strong experience independently locating HDD bores in underground utility environments.Ability to accurately track drill head depth, pitch, direction, and alignment.Experience working around existing underground utilities and congested utility areas.Ability to read bore plans, utility maps, and construction prints.Knowledge of potholing, pilot bores, reaming, pullbacks, and underground utility installation.HDD drill operating experience strongly preferred.Valid driver's license required.CDL required.Ability and willingness to travel based on project needs.
