Job summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Emergency Management is hiring a Hazardous Materials Officer - Training to coordinate and deliver statewide HazMat training and exercises. The role partners with local, state, federal, and private entities to build robust emergency planning and response capabilities.

Primary work will be at the HM/CBRN Training Center in Yorktown with up to two telework days weekly and statewide travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Subject‑matter expertise in hazardous materials recognition, emergency response, and training.
• Strong knowledge of hazmat/CBRNE incident standards and regulatory requirements.
• Experience in adult training methods, curriculum design, needs assessments, and evaluation.
• Develop, manage, and deliver comprehensive hazmat training programs using standard tools.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication across sectors.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate, develop, and implement statewide hazmat training and exercise programs.
• Collaborate with local, state, federal, and private partners for planning and response.
• Support special projects and research for HazMat training and response.
• Possibly enter hazardous areas for assessment or mitigation when needed.
• Provide program management in supervisor’s absence.
