Job summary

GFL Environmental, Inc. is seeking a HAZMAT Technician to join our Emergency Response Team in Illinois.

You will bring advanced technical expertise to emergency activations involving dangerous goods and support our 24/7 response, including weekends and holidays. Responsibilities include responding to spills, performing transloading, neutralization and decontamination, organizing resources, and ensuring equipment readiness while maintaining safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Physically fit and able to wear chemical protective clothing and respirators as required.
• Valid Driver's License required.
• Experience in hazardous materials emergency response is an asset.
• CDL preferred but not required.
• HAZWOPER Certification highly preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Respond at a moment's notice to spills including rail, road, and fixed facilities.
• Perform chemical transloading from one containment to another (tankcars, tank trucks, fixed facility tanks, etc.).
• Perform chemical neutralization and decontamination as required.
• Assist with organizing resources for response situations, including personnel, equipment and documentation.
• Ensure emergency response equipment is operational and maintained.
• Gather and maintain all relevant information and documentation when providing emergency services.
• Lead safety in all aspects of emergency response and ensure compliance with procedures.
• Set up and participate in live training events to ensure competency of personnel.
• Willing to participate in specialized scheduled projects as required.
• Processing recycling material and drums.
