Job description

POSITION: Hazardous Waste Technician

SEASON: February - April

LOCATION: Port Hueneme, California

SECTOR/DEPT: Six Mile, LLC Antarctica

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for the collection, processing and packaging of all hazardous waste, including legal classification, required packaging and proper labeling of all containers.
  2. Ability to be extremely detail oriented and meet a high level of quality control regarding highly regulated USAP hazardous wastes.
  3. Ability to learn and follow all ACA, EPA, NRC, IMDG, DOT, State, rules and regulations regarding hazardous wastes being shipped.
  4. Ability to complete all documentation and tracking to a high degree of accuracy.
  5. Perform certain classification qualitative testing on items (pH testing, flash point testing, etc.).
  6. Perform safe operation of an articulating forklift.
  7. Quality checks all shipping containers and correct discrepancies immediately.
  8. Assist the Solid Waste Department as needed.
  9. Ability to supply manual labor (shoveling) for several hours if needed.
  10. Regular use of drum dollies, cargo straps, banding, shovels, pallet jacks, power tools and other tools.
  11. Position requires constant physical activity, including bending, consistently lifting and carrying 50 - 70 lbs reaching and gripping.
  12. Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities of the Waste department.
  13. Able to work in a team unit composed of diverse personalities.
  14. Displays self-motivation in physically challenging and atypical work environment; position is comprised of approximately 70% outdoor tasking.
  15. Able to maintain flexibility and positive attitude in a dynamic, fast-paced work setting.
  16. Performs duties in support of Operations Division metrics (as provided by supervisor).
  17. Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly, affected by this position's work activities.
  18. Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety, and Quality Assurance, requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.
  19. Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments.
  20. Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
  21. Perform other duties as required.
  22. Reports to Program Manager.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. College degree (2 additional years of experience will substitute).
  2. Strong computer software experience.
  3. Able to lift 50 pounds consistently and wear a respirator.
  4. Valid Driver's License and Passport.
  5. Able to stand for up to 12 hours daily.
  6. Must be able to lift the safety regulation maximum and perform functions requiring repetitive motion required.
  7. Must pass physical qualification assessment.
  8. Able to deploy to Antarctica for length of contract.

PREFERRED:

  1. 1 year of Hazardous Materials shipping/characterization or reporting experience or 2 years of Environmental remediation.
  2. 1 year of High School Chemistry or equivalent.
  3. 1 quarter of college General Chemistry.
  4. College degree in Chemistry or Environmental Science.
  5. OSHA HazWOPER 40-Hour, current.
  6. Familiarity with power tools and machinery.
  7. Equipment operating experience.

EDUCATION: College degree (2 additional years of experience will substitute).

CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver's License and passport valid for six months after end of contract.

OTHER: US citizenship or permanent residency required.

A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment. Candidates hired for this position will be required to complete online forms, written forms, fingerprint cards and provide additional details and information as requested by NSF Personnel Security.
