Job summary

The State of North Carolina, Department of Environmental Quality, seeks an Engineer I (NS) in the Waste Management Division to provide project oversight of permitted hazardous waste facilities.

The role requires reviewing permit applications, remedial investigation work plans and reports, and ensuring compliance while coordinating with staff, facility personnel, EPA Region 4, and the public. Hybrid telework is available with some office days in Raleigh.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in an applicable field of engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Professional engineer (PE) registration may be required by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Responsibilities

• Perform technical reviews and evaluations of RCRA corrective action documents and oversee groundwater compliance for hazardous waste management facilities.
• Review and modify closure and post-closure plans and conduct technical reviews and evaluations of hazardous waste management permit applications.
• Interact with EPA Region 4 and department personnel.
• Provide technical information to the public and facilities.
• Keep track of facility compliance activities and progress on projects.
