ABOUT THE PROJECT
The VISTA Volunteer Reader Coordinator will help break the cycle of poverty by providing literacy supports to children from birth to third grade in North Hartford and, for one position, in Hartford and New Britain. The project aims to improve reading proficiency and prepare students for academic success by fourth grade. The Coordinator will recruit and train volunteers, including for the United Way Readers program, to deliver literacy‑based interventions that support early childhood development and help children achieve their full potential.

POSITION SUMMARY
As the VISTA Volunteer Reader Coordinator, you will build capacity for the volunteer reader program at an elementary school in North Hartford. You will recruit and train volunteers, coordinate reading events and activities, and develop resources to support volunteer readers. Your goal is to expand the program’s reach and impact, promoting literacy and a love of reading among community children.
MEMBER DUTIES
- Work with school and partner agency staff to develop a plan that increases student enrollment and participation.
- Evaluate program materials, update training materials, and maintain onboarding resources.
- Develop and implement a recruitment strategy to identify new volunteers and coordinate program schedule and assignments.
- Track volunteer engagement, provide on‑site support, and monitor program performance and student improvement.
- Develop regular volunteer communications, evaluate the volunteer experience, gather feedback, and coordinate recognition events.
- Attend regular meetings with the team and supervisor.
