Description

Ebels Hardware in Falmouth is looking for a Full-Time Small Engine Mechanic / Technician to diagnose, repair, service, and maintain a variety of gasoline-powered and battery-powered outdoor equipment. Equipment may include lawn mowers, zero-turn mowers, snowblowers, chainsaws, generators, pressure washers, trimmers, blowers, tillers, log splitters, and other outdoor power equipment. This position requires strong mechanical knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to completing repairs safely, accurately, and efficiently. The Small Engine Mechanic must maintain clear repair documentation, communicate professionally with customers and coworkers, and help provide an honest and dependable service experience. The ideal candidate is mechanically skilled, organized, dependable, and willing to continue learning as equipment technology and manufacturer requirements change.

Compensation for this position ranges from $18.00 to $24.00 per hour, based on experience, skills, and qualifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and service lawn mowers, zero-turn mowers, snowblowers, chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, generators, pressure washers, tillers, log splitters, and other outdoor power equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, fuel, ignition, cooling, charging, and starting systems, including two-cycle and four-cycle gasoline engines and battery-powered equipment when trained and authorized.
  • Perform minor and major engine repairs and replace components such as carburetors, fuel lines, belts, pulleys, cables, starters, batteries, switches, wiring, blades, and spindles.
  • Use diagnostic tools, service manuals, wiring and parts diagrams, and manufacturer information to accurately diagnose and complete repairs.
  • Test repaired equipment to verify proper operation, performance, and safety, and report additional repair needs or unauthorized work to the Service Manager.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, listen to equipment concerns, explain repair findings and recommendations, and provide realistic expectations regarding costs and completion times.
  • Work cooperatively with the Service Manager, parts employees, sales staff, and other technicians; assist with diagnosis, repairs, and training as needed.
  • Participate in company meetings, safety training, and manufacturer training.
  • Assist with service department workflow during peak seasons, including equipment loading, unloading, pickup, and delivery when assigned.
  • Maintain dependable attendance, arrive prepared and on time, and perform other duties related to service department operations.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of two-cycle and four-cycle gasoline engines, with the ability to diagnose common mechanical, fuel, ignition, starting, charging, and electrical issues.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, and ability to prioritize multiple work orders and work independently.
  • Ability to safely operate and service outdoor power equipment and use service manuals, parts diagrams, wiring schematics, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Technical or vocational training, multi-brand equipment experience, battery-powered equipment experience, warranty documentation, or welding/fabrication skills preferred.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and oral and written instructions while providing dependable, respectful customer service.
  • Willingness to learn new equipment, technology, and repair procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record when operating company vehicles or assisting with pickup and delivery.
  • Ability to work occasional Saturdays and extended hours during peak seasons.
  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, bend, reach, crouch, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to safely work around engines, fuel, oil, batteries, sharp and moving components, cleaning chemicals, and varying indoor and outdoor conditions.
