Job summary

SGS Consulting in Washington, DC is seeking a hands-on Hardware/ Firmware Engineer to prototype and test optical systems. The role focuses on operating HW prototypes, debugging, and collaborating with software tools while supporting on-site vendor checks.

Candidates should have a strong EE/Software background, experience with firmware and data analytics, and the ability to travel to campus and vendor sites for weekly prototype reviews.

Qualifications

• Firmware and data analytics experience with HW prototype development.
• Proficiency in programming languages and commands.
• Strong software skills; optics background is a plus.
• Hardware prototyping/EE background required.
• Not overqualified; suitable fit required.
• Hardware test engineering experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Operate optical HW prototypes (including PCB boards, electrical flexes, cameras, LEDs).
• Operate on existing SW tools (running command line scripts and GUI, familiarity with on demand server).
• Basic SW/HW troubleshooting skills (basic understanding of command line scripts, practices like restarting HW etc.).
• Train moderators on how to use prototype devices.
• Ability to drive to and from the campus to vendor sites for weekly checks on prototype devices.

Skills

• 5+ years of experience and have good firmware and data analytics background with HW/prototype development background as well
• Familiar with common program languages and commands
• Must have strong software skills, an optics background is great, this role is very hands-on
• Operating hardware prototypes (EE background is great)
• Software or Electrical engineer degree is a must
• Not looking for someone super or over-qualified for this role as they will likely not be a good fit
• Hardware prototyping engineering background would be perfect
• Hardwar Test Engineer would be good
• Mechanical Test engineer would likely not be a good fit
