Job summary

Employee Relations Associates, Inc. is seeking a HAP Accountant in Chandler, AZ, to manage accounting activities related to Housing Assistance Payments. The successful candidate will perform audits, support resident accounts, and ensure compliance with HUD policies.

Responsibilities include providing financial information for tenancy approval, managing Yardi, and communicating with housing partners. Candidates should have accounting experience and a relevant degree.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys researching discrepancies, reconciling resident accounts, and working in a fast-paced environment.

The HAP Accountant will manage accounting activities related to Housing Assistance Payments and perform monthly audits to ensure program and regulatory compliance.

What You'll Do

Provide financial information for Request for Tenancy Approval (RTA) packets for prospective residents

Access Housing Authority portals to retrieve payment information

Create receipt batches in Yardi and accurately apply HAP payments

Research HAP payments and resident accounts receivable balances

Audit and reconcile resident ledgers to ensure payments and charges are applied correctly

Review HAP contracts and resident leases to verify charges and payment requirements

Communicate with property management teams and Housing Authorities to resolve discrepancies

Maintain accurate documentation and share relevant HAP correspondence

Support general accounting responsibilities, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, journal entries, and general ledger reconciliations

Perform monthly audits to ensure compliance with HUD policies and program requirements

What We're Looking For

At least two years of relevant accounting or property management experience

Property management, affordable housing, or residential real estate experience

Experience working with HAP, HCV, Housing Authorities, or similar housing assistance programs

Knowledge of HUD policies and regulations within a housing environment

Experience with Yardi or another property management accounting system

General accounting experience, including AR, AP, journal entries, and ledger reconciliations

Intermediate Excel skills, including exporting data and creating internal reports

Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills

Ability to explain processes and procedures clearly to internal and external partners

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

High level of accuracy and attention to detail when auditing resident ledgers and accounting systems

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field preferred

Please note: This position requires property management and housing-related accounting experience. Mortgage underwriting systems such as Encompass, DU, and LPA do not directly align with the responsibilities of this role.
