IBM Quantum at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY seeks a Quantum Materials R&D Engineer to advance superconducting thin films, interconnects, and solder systems for next‑gen quantum hardware.

You will conduct deposition, characterization, and failure analysis in a laboratory setting, collaborating with scientists and engineers across the quantum hardware organization. This on-site role emphasizes hands-on development, utilizing advanced fabrication and metrology tools

Qualifications

PhD in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related field.
MS with 3+ years of relevant industry experience.
BS with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
Minimum 5 years of experience in characterization and development of superconductors, metallic thin films, and/or solder systems.

Responsibilities

Develop and optimize advanced packaging interconnects, metal thin films, and solder systems to improve device yield and reliability.
Investigate materials-related loss mechanisms via interfacial scattering, grain boundaries, defects, and chemical inhomogeneities.
Design and execute experiments using test vehicles to evaluate materials behavior and performance.
Partner with design and process engineering teams to integrate new materials into packaging solutions.
Prepare and analyze samples using advanced characterization techniques.
Perform electrical, structural, and chemical analyses to understand material properties.
Apply statistical methods to extract insights from experimental data.
Characterize using XPS, SIMS, FIB/TEM, XRD, XRF to identify root causes and drive improvements.
Identify technical risks, guide material selection, and support integration into fabrication processes.
Provide technical leadership and mentor junior engineers.
