Job summary

The City of Columbia SC seeks an entry-level mechanic to learn and perform semi-skilled maintenance and repair on city automobiles, trucks and light-to-medium equipment. You will work under general supervision to ensure vehicles run safely and reliably.

You will perform preventive maintenance, assist with complex repairs, and support emergency vehicle service while maintaining shop organization and safety standards.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• No prior experience.
• Valid South Carolina Class “D” Driver’s License.
• Possess a mechanic’s tool set.

Responsibilities

• Performs preventive maintenance duties such as oil changes, lubrication, belt/ hose replacements, brakes, lights, and engine tuning.
• Assists in diagnosing and repairing engines, fuel systems, electrical and drivetrain components on city vehicles.
• Repairs emergency and law enforcement vehicles; installs and maintains equipment as needed.
• Performs welding and fabrication work as required.
• Changes and inspects tires and collects oil samples for analysis.
