Job summary

Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL) invites an Intern - Environmental Geochemistry Research I for a 6‑month, hourly position in Menlo Park. Responsibilities include preparing and characterizing environmental soil samples, performing XRF/XRD/TOC analyses, and supporting reactive‑transport experiments under supervision.

You will gain hands-on experience with synchrotron‑based measurements, data processing workflows, and particle separation methods in a multidisciplinary environment,

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in environmental science, geochemistry, geology, chemistry, environmental engineering, or related field.
• Completed college-level coursework in environmental science, chemistry, geochemistry, geology, or related field.
• Hands-on experience with environmental laboratory and/or field research.
• Ability to safely prepare samples, solutions, and experimental systems using established procedures.
• Experience collecting, organizing, and processing quantitative scientific data and a willingness to learn interpretation techniques.

Responsibilities

• Prepare environmental soil samples for TOC analysis using XRF, XRD, and EA.
• Quantify elements and identify mineral phases from XRD patterns using SMAK.
• Support reactive-transport column experiments and groundwater preparation.
• Assist with separating biogenic FeS particles from sulfate-reducing bacteria.
• Prepare water samples and maintain accurate lab records and documentation.
