Job description

As a patient, getting pampered can significantly contribute to your well-being. At St Michael’s, our patients eagerly anticipate scheduling appointments with a hairdresser.

Our hairdressing/barber volunteers provide patients with a friendly and dignified service that will enhance their self-esteem. As a qualified hairdresser/barber, your tasks will be:

  1. Reporting to the Senior Nurse in Charge on arrival to establish who requires the hairdressing service and their individual needs.
  2. Adhering to the infection control policy, NHS handwashing policy (including washing hands between each patient), and seeking advice from the senior nurse before undertaking hairdressing activities.
  3. Being aware of all relevant St Michael’s Hospice Policies & Procedures.
  4. Undertaking hairdressing as requested by the patient/carer within the scope of practice.
  5. Considering the comfort, position, and safety of patients with complex medical needs.
  6. Not using chemicals such as colouring and perming.
  7. Properly using salon equipment to ensure patient and staff safety and comfort.
  8. Using personal scissors for haircuts.
  9. Leaving the salon in a clean, tidy, and hygienic condition after each patient and at the end of each shift.
  10. Attending role-specific training as required.
About you:

This volunteering opportunity would be ideal for someone who has good knowledge of:

  • Dealing with people experiencing life-limiting illnesses, requiring sensitivity and confidentiality.
  • Being considerate and courteous to patients, visitors, staff, and other volunteers.
  • Hairdressing/Barbering experience and relevant qualifications.

  • Can work effectively as part of a team.

This role is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Volunteers must provide qualification certificates before starting duties.
