Wayland Union Schools in Michigan is offering a Secondary Guidance Counselor Intern position for graduates or graduate students. The internship provides hands-on experience supporting students in academic, personal, and career development under the supervision of experienced counselors.

You will work collaboratively with teachers and families, participate in team meetings, and help develop a Professional Growth Plan while completing a 30-week, 20-hours-per-week schedule funded by a grant.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master’s program in School Counseling or related field.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, parents, and staff.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

• Assist in providing individual and group counseling to address academic, emotional, social, and career needs.

Responsibilities & Duties:

• Student Support:
  • Assist in providing individual and group counseling sessions to address students' academic, emotional, social, and career-related needs.
  • Help students develop coping strategies, goal-setting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Offer support to students dealing with personal or family issues, academic stress, and peer relationships.
• Academic Guidance:
  • Aid in the development and implementation of academic plans tailored to student needs.
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to students, parents, and teachers.
  • Assist in coordinating standardized testing and interpreting test results for students and parents.
• Career Counseling:
  • Help students explore post-secondary education and career options.
  • Assist in organizing career fairs, college visits, and informational sessions.
• Program Development:
  • Contribute to the creation and delivery of guidance curriculum and programs.
  • Participate in workshops and training sessions for students, parents, and faculty.
  • Assist in the development of materials and resources to support the guidance program.
• Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success.
  • Participate in team meetings and case conferences to discuss student progress and strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress.
• With their Supervising Guidance Counselor, develop a Professional Growth Plan, including objective outcomes, and complete the plan throughout their internship/practicum year

Terms of Employment:

Grant funded for 2026-2027 School Year, 30 weeks, 20 hours/week
Contingent upon passing post-offer background checks
