Job summary

Volunteers of America Los Angeles is seeking a Community Intervention Worker to serve as a liaison between youth, adults and the community, reducing gang violence and delivering Transitional Client Services. The role relies on strong ties to the local community and familiarity with local gang culture.

The CIW will work on-site, assess clients, plan services, and coordinate with partners such as WorkSource, YouthSource and FamilySource to connect participants with needed resources.

Qualifications

  • 3 years' experience with at-risk families/individuals or gang population.
  • Ability to work with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients.
  • On-site requirement: report to work on-site daily.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with assessment/case planning and deliver Transitional Client Services.
  • Engage gang-involved youth/young adults aged 14-25 in GRYD Zone.
  • Maintain a caseload: 11 FCM clients and 5 TCS clients.
  • Conduct fieldwork to connect clients with WorkSource, YouthSource and FamilySource.
  • Follow all phases of case management using SET and ETO.
  • Meet weekly with Case Managers and participate in GRYD events.
  • Plan gang-reduction activities and coordinate with LAPD/GRYD Office.

JOB SUMMARY AND PURPOSE

The Community Intervention Worker (CIW) serves as a liaison between youth, adults and the community to minimize acts of gang violence and to improve community relations. The CIW provides incident response and delivers Transitional Client Services. CIW have strong ties to the local community and existing relationships, being familiar with the gang culture of the target community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ASSESSMENT/CASE PLANNING: working with Case Managers, delivers Transitional Client Services.

  • Serves and engages gang-involved youth or young adults, ages of 14 to 25 years in a GRYD Zone
  • Maintain a minimum of 11 FCM clients updated and active
  • Maintain a minimum of 5 TCS client updated and active
  • Conducts fieldwork with clients to ensure connection with WorkSource, YouthSource and FamilySource services
  • Follow all phases of case management, applying Social Embededness Tool (SET), data entry into Entry to Outcomes (ETO) on client activities and progress
  • Meet weekly with Case Managers
  • Participate in planning, meetings and work at Summer Night Lights (SNL) and Fall Friday Nights (FFN) sites
  • Strategically plan and work with community to decrease and eliminate gang activity and violence
    • Plans strategies to engage local gangs/crews proactively maintain peace via safe passages, and activities
    • Work with Law enforcement to create peace in the community
    • Transport clients as needed
    • Assists with safe passages for youth and families within the community
  • Maintain triangle of protocol with LAPD, and GRYD Office
  • Participate in 24/7 incident response coverage in assigned GRYD zone.
ESSENTIAL ABILITY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Ability to work and deal with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients as VOALA serves the neediest of the needy in our programs, which may include clients with homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, recently released from incarceration, and other challenges.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Services for this position must be provided on-site. As a result, the position requires incumbents to report to work on-site each day of active employment.
  • Delivery of Transitional Client Services –
    • Maintain a minimum of 11 FCM clients updated and active
    • Maintain a minimum of 5 TCS client updated and active
    • Conducts fieldwork with clients to ensure connection with WorkSource, YouthSource and FamilySource services
  • Strategic efforts at Gang reduction in community – plan and execute gang reduction events and activities, conduct safe passage efforts
  • Maintain triangle of protocol with LAPD, and GRYD Office.
  • Advocacy for participants before other agencies/community settings
  • Other duties as required and is subject to change at any time.
MANDATED REPORTER

As service providers to the underprivileged and vulnerable in our community, all employees are considered Mandated Reporters, and must report any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications
  • Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflicts dealing with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients as VOALA serves the neediest of the needy in our programs which may include clients with homelessness, mental-illness, substance abuse, recently released from incarceration and other challenges.
EXPERIENCE:
  • 3 years' experience working with At-risk families/individuals or gang population
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Trained on the GRYD Model of practice and the Efforts to Outcome (ETO) Database
  • Basic Microsoft operating system navigation, outlook, word, excel, power-point
