Job summary

The Oregon Youth Challenge Program is seeking a Group Life Coordinator 2 to lead and supervise cadets in a 24/7 residential setting in Bend, Oregon. You will oversee safety, program components, and life-skill development while partnering with staff to deliver structured academic and military-style activities.

Responsibilities include guiding youth through daily routines, fitness training, and classroom instruction, with emphasis on professional behavior, teamwork, and positive youth development.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma, GED, or higher.
  • Six months of experience observing, evaluating, or understanding human performance and relations.

Major Duties
  • Responsible for the care, control, safety and security of youth in a 24/7 facility
  • Supervise youth with emphasis on safety, personal growth, teamwork and the program’s eight core components. Promote positive youth development by establishing healthy professional relationships, role-modeling desired professional behaviors, maintaining an exceptional uniform appearance and ensuring a safe training environment.
  • Monitoring and reporting the behavior of cadets during daily activities, offsite community projects, academic instruction, meals and extracurricular activities.
  • Work effectively with youth who may have social, economic, emotional, or behavioral challenges. Assist youth in developing short- and long-term goals, overcoming obstacles, conflict resolution and developing life skills.
  • Plans, leads and participates in daily physical fitness activities which includes running and calling cadence.
  • Provides classroom instruction on a variety of topics related to program standards and character development.

What You Will be Doing The Oregon Youth Challenge Program is an intensive alternative High School for "At Risk" 16-18-year-old Oregon dropouts. The program is funded, directed and sponsored by the State of Oregon Military Department, National Guard. It provides a unique educational opportunity for high school dropouts within an intensive military structure and overview. The students (Cadets) participate in daily academic instruction, community service, physical exercise (PT), 1+ mile run and the President's Council on Physical Fitness activities. The program is a two (2) phase enterprise consisting of a 22-week residential academic/military phase and a 12 month Post Residential phase consisting of life planning and community re-integration. The program curriculum is modeled on 8 CORE components that focuses on academic excellence, physical fitness, nutrition, community involvement, leadership and followership, health skills development and life planning. The program is staffed by professional teachers, counseling staff, residential supervision cadre and managers. The program is located in Bend, Oregon on land owned by the Federal Government on loan to the State Military Department. This position is responsible for the care, control, safety, security, and Life Plan guidance of all the students in the program.

Working Conditions
  • Occasional lifting and physical exertion is necessary to perform assigned tasks and duties.
  • Occasional exposure to adverse weather and environmental conditions.
  • Required to work various shifts; days, swing, graveyard, weekends and holidays and subject to occasional overnight travel.
  • May come in contact with irate students, parents and the general public.
  • Required to transport students in State-owned vehicles.
  • Must be able to personally "call military cadence".
  • Extensive walking, regular marching, and extensive running with students.
  • Position requires being on your feet and standing for entire 8-hour shifts.
  • Requires average to above average physical conditioning.
  • Must be able to maintain physical fitness standards in accordance with program requirements and demonstrate annually.
  • Must maintain personal appearance standards in accordance with program requirements.
  • As Part of the daily requirements both students and staff are required to participate in a regimen of exercise and physical training. This may include participating and assisting with a confidence course developed specifically for this program to build confidence in the students.
  • Staff must be able to lead and motivate students in achieving course standards and participating in daily formations, group exercises and group runs.
  • Schedule changes are frequent due to limited resources, National Guardsmen drills, illness, vacation.
Qualifications
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma, GED certificate, or other proof of education at the same or higher level.
  • Six (6) months experience observing, evaluating, developing, or understanding of human performance, relations and interactions.
  • OR a certificate or associate degree from an accredited school in a behavioral science, education, criminal justice, or related degree.
  • OR six (6) months of prior military experience, law enforcement or corrections experience.
  • Must pass a physical fitness standard in accordance with program requirements.

Additional Requirements
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • If applying from out of state, be prepared to provide a 3-year driving abstract from your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Pass a fingerprint-based criminal background and abuse check.
  • All employees in this classification/position shall be subject to testing for the use of prohibited drugs and must pass a preemployment drug screening test.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must possess or obtain and maintain (within 6 months of hire) a CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain (within 120 days of hire) a Commercial Driver License (CDL).
  • Employee is required to maintain a drug/alcohol free workplace in accordance with OMD Drug/Alcohol CPM’s, Policies, and the Statewide Drug Free Workplace Policy 50-000-01.
  • Must maintain physical fitness standards (tested annually).
  • Maintain military style grooming standards.
  • Wear a modified military uniform and safety equipment as required.
  • Employee is required to maintain a drug/alcohol free workplace in accordance with OMD Drug/Alcohol CPM’s, Policies, and the Statewide Drug Free Workplace Policy 50-000-01.
