Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) seeks a Group Lead for the Software Engineering team in the Scientific Networking Division to drive engineering leadership across the full software lifecycle. The role focuses on building a robust software delivery function and advancing ESnet's global networking capabilities.

The ideal candidate has an advanced degree, 10+ years of experience including leadership, and a track record in agile software development, cloud, and modern tooling.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
• Proven leadership in supervising technical teams and budgeting.
• Hands-on experience with mission-critical services, HA, and recovery.
• Experience leading medium to large software projects using agile methods.

Responsibilities

• Provide engineering leadership across the full software lifecycle from architecture to operations.
• Build and lead a delivery function focused on robust, secure, and innovative services.
• Own software portfolio planning including requirements, prioritization, and documentation.
• Establish development, testing, and CI/CD practices to ensure high-quality products.
• Recruit, mentor, and develop a diverse technical team with clear growth plans.
• Partner with customers and stakeholders to define requirements and communicate tradeoffs.
