Job summary

The University of Miami, Department of Wellness and Recreation, is seeking a part-time Group Fitness Instructor to develop and lead engaging group workouts focused on safety and effective conditioning.

Under supervision, you will follow program policies, clock in/out, manage attendance, and ensure a clean, safe studio. CPR/AED certification is required along with a current national fitness credential. Prior experience leading group classes is preferred and availability during breaks is a plus.

  • Knowledge of various group exercise formats.

  • Must follow Wellness and Recreation policies and University procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Be present 10 minutes before class and available 10 minutes after; classes start/end on time.
  • Clock in for classes and record attendance.
  • Use microphone headset during class; turn off and store after use.
  • Ensure room cleanliness and safety; manage equipment; arrange substitutes as needed.
  • Notify supervisor 24 hours in advance if substitution is required.

Job description

Position: Group Fitness Instructor

Employer: University of Miami, Department of Wellness and Recreation

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director, Instructional Programs, Group Fitness Instructor shall develop and implement an appropriate group fitness class emphasizing fun, safety, and effective conditioning.

Instructors shall have a complete and thorough understanding of all policies and procedures concerning the Group Exercise program and Department of Wellness and Recreation. Policies are covered in the DWR Student Employee Handbook, Fitness Instructor Manual, schedules and training sessions.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • a. Instructors are required to be present at least 10 minutes before class starting time and available at least 10 minutes after class end time. Classes should start and end on time.
  • b. Each instructor is responsible for clocking in for their respective classes and is also responsible for recording attendance of each class.
  • c. The microphone headset shall be used at all times during the class. The microphone and stereo shall be turned off after each use and stored appropriately. The battery rotation system must be learned and adhered to.
  • d. Each instructor shall ensure general cleanliness and safety of the room before, during, and after class. Equipment storage areas and equipment is the responsibility of the instructor and shall be left in good order after each class. Instructors are responsible for finding appropriate substitutes before class. Failure to show for class or provide an appropriate substitute will be grounds for dismissal. Instructors shall notify the Assistant Director at least 24 hours prior to class of the substitution.

Instructors shall make a personal commitment to ensure the satisfaction of all participants, treat all participants with respect, concern and give personal attention when needed. The instructor shall abide by any/all other DWR policies and perform any other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a current nationally recognized fitness certification (ACE, ACSM, NASM, AFAA, or equivalent).
  • Ability to conduct safe and effective classes.
  • Knowledgeable in techniques and dynamics of group exercise.
  • Knowledge in a variety of group exercise class formats.
  • Possession of current certification(s) for specific class formats, including adult CPR/AED.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular exercise and strength training principles.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Must adhere to the Wellness and Recreation and University policies and procedures.
  • Must be reliable and dependable.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience teaching or leading group exercise classes.
  • Available to work during winter and summer breaks.
