Job summary

Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium seeks a Group & Family Programs Supervisor to lead the development and delivery of group and family education experiences, including camps, overnights, and scout programs. Under general direction, you will supervise staff, manage calendars, and coordinate resources and training.

This full-time on-site role requires strong communication, program evaluation, and collaboration with Conservation/Education teams, with willingness to work weekends and evenings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, biology or related field preferred.
  • 2-3 years’ experience with formal/informal education programs strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in zoos, aquariums, museums, interpretation, or related field welcomed.
  • Previous experience coordinating camps, tours, and other fee-based programs preferred.
  • Experience supervising and/or working with volunteers welcomed.
  • Knowledge of conservation/biological/environmental teaching programs and interpretation welcomed.
  • Knowledge of classroom management techniques and skills using teaching aids, including animal, biofacts, artifacts, and library resources preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and audio-visual equipment, required.
  • Strong presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Can move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
  • Must be willing to become CPR/First-Aid certified.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overnight/evening hours, in all weather extremes.
  • Must pass a background and drug screening.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under general direction, the Group & Family Programs Supervisor is responsible for the organization, development, and implementation of all group & family education programs and experiences. Associated programs include camps, overnights, and scout programs. This position is responsible for supervising group and family staff along with camp programming, while supporting the overall mission and associated education programs of the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium.

POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Oversees all operational aspects of all group programs, such as camps, family programs, and on-grounds education experiences, including:

  • Coordinating, scheduling, evaluating, and supervising program execution.
  • Leading programs when necessary.
  • Purchasing, organizing, and maintaining program supplies and materials.
  • Overseeing staffing, training, scheduling, evaluation, and administration of associated programs.
  • Coordinating management of resources and technology for associated programming.
  • Establishing and managing the annual program calendar.
  • Compiling, maintaining, and reporting on program participation and impact.

  • Overseeing the hiring and onboarding process of area education staff.
  • Overseeing and assisting with employee training, evaluation, and discipline.
  • Assists with facilitating and implementing the mission, strategic plan, and core values of the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium.
