Job summary

Matrix New World Engineering, part of True Environmental and its partner firms, seeks a Groundwater Modeler / Hydrogeologist to join our Phoenix team. You will contribute to groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling and support hydrogeologic investigations for water resources and environmental projects.

The ideal candidate has 3 years of groundwater modeling with a Master’s degree or 6 years with a Bachelor’s, and hands-on proficiency with MODFLOW, MT3D, FEFLOW, ArcGIS Pro, and Python

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in Geology, Hydrology, Environmental Science or related field; Master’s preferred.
• 3 years groundwater modeling with Master’s degree or 6 years with Bachelor's.
• Licensed or willing to obtain RG in Arizona within 24 months.

Responsibilities

• Build, calibrate, and apply groundwater flow and solute transport models.
• Perform sensitivity, uncertainty, and predictive analyses for projects.
• Manage and evaluate hydrogeologic datasets for CSM development.
• Assist with regulatory permit applications and AWS analyses.

Matrix New World Engineering, a part of True Environmental and its partner firms, is seeking a Groundwater Modeler / Hydrogeologist to join our team in Phoenix, AZ.

Our Arizona Water Services group focuses on hydrogeological and environmental consulting with offices in Phoenix and Prescott, and remote staff located in North and South America. The ideal candidate will participate in groundwater flow and contaminant transport modeling and support hydrogeologic investigations for water resources and environmental consulting projects.

• Build, calibrate, and apply numerical groundwater flow and solute transport models under the direction of senior technical staff.
• Perform sensitivity, uncertainty, and predictive analyses for water resource and remediation modeling projects.
• Compile, evaluate, and manage spatial and subsurface datasets (including geologic, hydrogeologic, and water quality data) to support Conceptual Site Model (CSM) development.
• Assist with technical aspects of projects supporting regulatory frameworks, such as the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) permitting programs such as Aquifer Protection Permit (APP) and Arizona Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES) permit applications
• Assist with ADWR Assured and Adequate Water Supply (AWS) applications, complete with aquifer impact analyses including projected groundwater mounding and potential mobilization of contaminants in the vadose zone and aquifer.
• Assist with Hydrogeologic characterization in support of developing managed aquifer recharge (MAR) sites and aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells, complete with aquifer impact analyses including projected groundwater mounding and potential mobilization of contaminants in the vadose zone and aquifer
• Assist with data collection, aquifer testing analysis, and data interpretation.
• Draft technical reports, memos, figures, and technical appendices for project deliverables.
• Support Project Managers with cost estimation, proposal preparation, and task management.
• Coordinate with project teams, sub-consultants, and laboratory personnel to ensure dynamic, on-time project execution.

• Education: Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrology, Environmental Science, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
• Professional Experience: 3 years of experience with a Master’s degree or 6 years of experience with a Bachelors degree in groundwater modeling, hydrogeology, water resources, or environmental consulting
• Licensure: Registered Geologist (RG) in Arizona or other state preferred; ability to obtain AZ registration within 24 months if not already licensed
• Modeling Software: Hands‑on proficiency with numerical groundwater flow and transport modeling software using the Modular Finite‑Difference Flow Model (MODFLOW), Model Transport in 3 Dimensional (MT3D) and Finite Element Subsurface Flow System (FEFLOW) suites of software, Groundwater Vistas processing applications and Groundwater Modeling Systems (GMS) or ModelMuse graphical user interfaces (GUIs)
• Support Software: Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS Pro) and PYTHON script development and also Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access)
• Modeling Experience: Extensive groundwater modeling experience and familiarity with the unique groundwater challenges and regulations in Arizona and the arid Southwestern United States
• Experience with Arizona regulatory standards and guidelines for groundwater modeling
• Experience with developing and applying groundwater flow and transport models in support of environmental compliance, hydrogeologic evaluation and decision making and litigation support
• Additional Requirements: Strong technical writing and communication skills, with experience preparing technical reports and deliverables.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently on multiple projects both independently and as part of a dynamic project team.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills for managing model files and datasets

• Familiarity with parameter estimation tools such as Parameter Elimination (PEST) and pilot point parameterization software
• Advanced data processing skills using Python, R, Excel, Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB) or script-based programs and dataset management tools
• Experience interpreting complex geologic and hydrogeologic data to develop Conceptual Site Models (CSMs)
• Prior experience supporting field characterization programs (e.g., well installation, logging, or pumping tests).
