Job summary

City of Murfreesboro, TN is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Worker to perform upkeep of parks, buildings, athletic fields, and related facilities within the Recreation Department.

The role requires strong English communication, a valid driver's license, and experience in landscaping. Candidates will handle mowing, gate/ restroom tasks, and facility setup for events in a safety-sensitive environment and will participate in routine maintenance and light repairs.

Qualifications

• Requires a High School diploma or GED, which may be waived by work experience.
• Experience in landscaping or closely related field preferred.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure safe operations.
• Mows and cuts grass with power equipment and tools.
• Open and close park gates, restrooms, and prepare fields for use.
• Load and unload dirt, gravel, and debris.
• Clean, maintain, and service equipment and tools.
• Picks up trash and disposes of it properly.
• Clean and restock restrooms and prepare picnic pavilions for reservations.
• Maintain and repair equipment, buildings, and grounds; repair irrigation systems.
• Move and set up for park functions (tables, bleachers, chairs).
• Trim or remove limbs after weather; spread fertilizer.
• Install mulch and perform landscape maintenance.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.

The purpose of this position is to conduct maintenance and upkeep of the public parks, grounds, buildings, athletic fields and related facilities within the Recreation Department.

Essential Functions

• Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
• Mows/cuts grass with power equipment, commercial riding mowers and weed eaters.
• Opens and closes park gates, restrooms and prepares fields for use.
• Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, and other debris.
• Cleans, maintains and services equipment and tools.
• Picks up trash in the parks areas and disposes of it properly.
• Cleans and restocks restrooms and cleans picnic pavilions and prepares them for reservations.
• Maintains and conducts light repair work on equipment, building and grounds; repairs irrigation systems.
• Moves and sets up for park functions requiring moving tables, bleachers, and chairs for concerts and special events.
• Cuts down and removes limbs, branches, and trees that have been damaged by adverse weather conditions.
• Trims and sprays weeds with herbicide; spreads fertilizer.
• Installs mulch and trims landscape.

• Performs other work as assigned.
