Job summary

The ASU Tempe campus is seeking a reliable Facilities Assistant 1 Non-Exempt to support groundskeeping, maintenance, and inspections. This night shift; Sunday–Thursday, 10:30 p.m.–7:00 a.m.; based at Tempe campus with possible assignment to other campuses as needed.

You will operate power washers, trucks, and equipment, perform routine maintenance, remove debris, manage litter, install/remove outdoor signage, and help keep walkways and landscaping in line with campus standards.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid US driver’s license may be required.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.
  • Experience in groundskeeping or related tasks is a bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain grounds and roads, landscaping tools and equipment; install/remove outdoor furniture/signage.
  • Remove debris from stairs and walkways; rake leaves; pick up debris piles.
  • Pick up litter and empty outdoor trash/recycling cans.
  • Remove solid waste from campus; separate recycled materials from landfill waste.
  • Operate high pressure power washer.
  • Operate trucks for hauling trash and debris removal.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools.
  • Use backpack blower, handsaws, and other tools for storm cleanup and tasks.
  • Install and remove outdoor signs and traffic controls as required.
  • Communicate clearly to perform essential functions.

Job Description

Facilities Management seeks a night groundskeeper to maintain grounds and participate in all types of grounds maintenance activities.

Essential Duties
  • Maintain grounds and roads, maintain landscaping tools and equipment. Perform maintenance, and install/remove outdoor furniture/signage.
  • Remove debris from stairs and walk, rake leaves pick up debris piles.
  • Pick up litter and empty outdoor trash/recycling cans.
  • Removal of solid waste from campus and keeping recycled materials separated from the landfill waste.
  • Operate high pressure power washer.
  • Operate pick-up trucks, stake-bed truck, flat-rack trucks and dump trucks for hauling purposes and for trash and debris removal.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair on equipment and tools as required.
  • Utilize backpack blower, handsaws, and other tools for storm clean up and other assigned tasks.
  • Utilize a S30 sidewalk sweeper and T20 ride-on surface scrubber.
  • Clean up around residential hall compactors and operate compactors safely.
  • Remove bulk items such as shipping crates, pallets, and metal scrap from various locations.
  • Install and remove outdoor signs, parking and traffic control barriers, and overhead banners as required.
  • Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
DAYS AND SCHEDULE

Sunday - Thursday; 10:30 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.

This position is based at ASU's Tempe campus and may require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.

Salary Rate or Salary Range

$20.12 per hour. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Desired Qualifications

Any experience which provides knowledge, skills and ability to perform the work. Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

  • Minor equipment maintenance (e.g. oil changes, blade sharpening, filter changes, spark plug changes, use of grease gun, etc.)

Evidence of effective communication skills

Working Environment
  • Activities regularly require long periods of exposure to external elements indigenous to a desert environment, weather, potential exposure to venomous insects, insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Regularly required to operate a variety of landscaping equipment, tools and machines requiring extended periods of walking over uneven and occasionally rocky surfaces, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and pushing objects of varying weights up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular use of mowers, trimmers, edgers, shears, spreaders, hoses, hand and power tools/machines. May regularly operate a motor vehicle as assigned.
  • This position receives regular review of daily work tasks to ensure adherence with established standards for quality, aesthetics, and quantity.
  • May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator).
  • Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
