About Central Park Conservancy

Central Park Conservancy is a private, not‑for‑profit organization that partners with the City of New York to maintain Central Park, a National Historic Landmark and New York Scenic Landmark.

Position Summary

The Groundskeeper in the Landscape Management Department provides care and maintenance of all landscape, hardscape, playgrounds, and architectural features within an assigned section of the Park. The position reports to the Foreperson and works under general supervision to ensure the Park’s landscape is maintained to organizational standards.

Responsibilities
  • Provide general landscape care and maintenance within an assigned section.
  • Care for and maintain all plant beds and surrounding landscapes, hardscapes, playgrounds, and perimeter areas on an established schedule.
  • Mowing, string trimming, irrigation, basic irrigation system maintenance, weeding, mulching, raking, sweeping, pruning, planting, and other related duties.
  • Open and clean playgrounds and ensure water features are operational.
  • Install and repair fences as needed and as directed.
  • Support waste‑management operations by picking up and disposing trash, emptying trash cans, and sweeping around benches, stairs, and entryways.
  • Maintain athletic fields using appropriate lawn‑care procedures, grooming infields, mounds, and other applicable areas.
  • Perform snow removal and ice mitigation on paths, entrances, playgrounds, perimeter, and other hard surfaces with machines and physical labor, ensuring safe access.
  • Maintain surface drainage by keeping catch basins free of debris during heavy rainstorms and managing snow and ice in winter.
  • Assist in the preparation of special events as needed.
  • Work with volunteers and seasonal interns and cooperate with other staff and departments.
  • Display initiative and dependability to work alone or in groups.
  • Interact with park patrons and colleagues in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Operate various types of equipment, including utility vehicles, light or medium‑weight trucks, and tractors.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report items requiring repair.
  • Participate in all training sessions and seminars.
  • Report daily any malfunctioning infrastructure, furnishings, safety hazards, or quality‑of‑life issues.
Qualifications
  • A four‑year high‑school diploma or equivalent.
  • Professional work experience in landscaping, park maintenance, turf maintenance, or horticulture.
  • Valid driver’s license, maintained for the duration of employment.
Additional Qualifications for Assignment to GroundskeeperII
  • Satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to three years of increased responsibility in landscape maintenance.
  • Proficient understanding and working knowledge of mowing, string trimming, irrigation, weeding, snow and ice mitigation.
  • Ability to maintain a landscape zone through all seasons with limited supervision.
  • Ability to identify ornamental and native plant material specific to the northeast U.S.
Salary Ranges

GroundskeeperI: $44,500 – $52,500
GroundskeeperII: $48,000 – $59,800
