Title: Groundskeeper

Job Summary: The Groundskeeper performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance, care, and modification of school grounds and landscapes which includes the operation of electrically-powered and liquid fuel-powered grounds keeping equipment and machines, and the use of small hand and power tools or equipment in planting, cultivating, and trimming grounds and landscaping, and power washing, window cleaning, etc. The Groundskeeper also performs maintenance on grounds keeping equipment and tools, and makes minor repairs (within demonstrated capability) as directed. The Groundskeeper changes light bulbs, paints walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment, makes minor carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs, delivers supplies, materials, and equipment as needed, retrieves and documents transfer of accountability of surplus property, provides custodial services, helps with fueling and cleaning of school fleet vehicles, etc.

Lines of Authority: Reports to the Director of Facilities

Education: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Required Qualifications
  • Past experience as a groundskeeper or similar service industry role.

  • Able to work outdoors and lift and carry grounds keeping supplies weighing up to 50 pounds on a consistent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to climb and properly operate a ladder.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Past experience with minor electrical and plumbing work
  • Past experience maintaining and operating light machinery

Physical and Mental Effort: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, climb or balance, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Essential Functions

Essential functions of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following functions. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Performs tasks common to the care of grounds and landscapes by seeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing, and applying chemicals to outside plantings, lawns and turf; inspecting plant materials for insects, disease, physical and mechanical damage and identifying replacements; transplanting, pruning, trimming, and cultivating trees, shrubs, ground cover, and flowers.
  2. Performs regular and directed grounds and landscape maintenance by mowing lawns with riding or push mowers; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks and buildings; weeding, thinning and cleaning flower beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment; and setting up, adjusting, repairing, and cleaning irrigation systems or coordinating repair that is beyond his/her ability to fix.
  3. Provides a record of grounds and landscape watering and chemical spraying by keeping daily logs of areas watered and duration of watering and the application of chemicals, including areas sprayed, amount and type of chemicals used, substances sprayed and reason.
  4. Performs campus-wide general maintenance and repairs as requested by Human Resources.
  5. Removes unsightly trash and debris from public areas by regularly inspecting grounds, drains, manhole covers, etc., for debris; raking, sweeping and bagging leaves, debris, dirt and trash from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, tunnels, and transporting trash to designated collection points on a daily basis.
  6. Applying salt or brine in walking traffic areas when temperatures are expected to fall below freezing while employees or students are on or are expected to be on campus.
  7. Wears appropriate clothing and protective gear for tasks at hand.
  8. Safely operates light vehicles such as pick-up trucks, tractors, street sweepers or riding mowers and portable power tools and equipment such as saws, grass trimmers, leaf blowers, sprayers, paint machines and other grounds keeping equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operator instructions, and wearing appropriate safety items such as goggles, gloves, or other appropriate protective clothing.
  9. Ensures that grounds maintenance equipment and building maintenance equipment are operational by performing routine and preventative maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment and machines within reasonable capabilities.
  10. Performs painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of building structures, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment.
  11. Contributes to the overall success of the campus by performing all other related duties as assigned.
  12. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
